Mission Statement:

Called in worship to care for others by sharing Christ's Love!

Life’s Too Short To Pretend You’re Not Religious

is the title of a book by David Dark, author and teacher at Belmont University who argues that “we should cease and desist from referring to others as religious, as if they’re participants in games we ourselves aren’t playing,” reminding us that “if what we believe is what we see is what we do is who we are, there’s no getting away from religion.”  (Read that over and over a few times!)

Dark has written a book for folks uncomfortable with religion, who say things like ‘I’m spiritual, but no way am I religious” as if being religious is a bad thing. Dark’s answer: whether we claim to be religious or not - we are!  You can’t escape being religious by saying you’re not.  Even those who avoid attending a church or religious gathering are still religious because it comes with the territory of being human.  Why?  Because we all do what the religious always do, we tell stories to help us see what we’re doing and who we really are.

Dark calls on all of us to pay attention to, and name, these stories that have formed us: “to affirm that a film or a comic book has been a means of grace to me is to begin to take stock of my own multitude of counselors, the voices I depend upon to make better and more artful sense of myself and others.”

Our curriculum for the final year of confirmation at DLC is Moving Images, Changing Lives: Exploring the Christian Life and Confirmation with Young People Through Film which draws on the best story tellers of popular culture - film makers! - to explore stories we all rely upon and crave.  As we connect these so-called ‘secular stories’ with stories from the Bible and the stories of our own unique lives, we begin to discover that the one we name ‘God’ is at work everywhere - not only in what we consider (tame) ‘religious’ places, or activities.  (We tried to seal him in a tomb, but that didn’t work - Christ’s on the loose!)

One of the things our senior confirmation students do is make a storyboard of their life (so far), just like a storyboard of a movie.  As they begin this project of telling the story of their life they begin to realize that it’s the one-of-a-kind scenes in each of their lives that reveal where they’ve been, give hints to where they’re going, and that it’s in the seemingly insignificant details of their lives (which we love to see in movies!) that make each one of them unique and special and precious in God’s sight.  God made them this way because God wanted one just like them. God made them this way because God has a unique part for each of them to play in the story that only they can play.  And God delights in them as they play that part in the unfolding story of their life!

On Sunday, May 6th we will celebrate what God is doing in the lives of four incredible young people as they say Yes! to the story of their life with God.  I hope you will join us because “life’s too short to pretend you’re not religious”!

We often wonder what the church is; why do people bother.  A few years ago confirmation students and mentors drew two pictures of the church: one group (the boys) drew the building and the other group (the girls) drew all the people.  There are those who see church as a place to have Faith Milestones “taken care of”: Baptism, Sunday School, First Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, Funerals. There are also those who see church as a place you  attend (but rarely) and only on  festival occasions like Easter and Christmas. And still others see church as the place of worship and fellowship where friendships are developed; a place of comfort and caring and love.  The truth, regardless of which group you’re in, is that you are the church, the living Body of Christ.

Milestone Ministry here at Deerfield Lutheran brings an awareness of the presence of God not only to children but families and individuals of all generations through a vital partnership between home and the Congregation. The Five Principles of Milestone Ministry are that it fosters healthy faith-forming relationships; it partners home and congregation in vibrant ministry; it lifts up the home as a primary setting to be the church in the world; it allows people to experience the faith so it may be caught in daily life occasions; and it honors the role of adults in the Christian formation of children and youth. Serving as central tools to all Milestone Ministry events are the Four Keys: Caring Conversations, Devotions, Service, and Rituals and Traditions. We celebrate milestones in worship throughout the year.

APPRECIATION OF CHURCH VOLUNTEERS

Our relationship and contacts with one another stimulate                         and sharpen us in our walk with God and life in general.                           We are able to grow, gain insights, share gifts, and  share                         God’s workings in the lives of others by volunteering                           within the church.  It is through helping and volunteering that we are able to spread the word and love of God.  We have very devoted young mothers and fathers who come each Sunday morning to teach Sunday School to a growing group of our young children. When you see them, Thank them! We have a wonderful group of musicians who have filled the sanctuary with songs and  the ringing of bells. We have our readers, lay assistants, ushers, communion servers, and others that do things behind the scenes.  Have you thanked them lately?  As spring comes, let us remember those who trim shrubs and have done the landscaping this spring, mow the lawn, care for the community garden. Have you thought about joining them in these opportunities to share your special talents and time? As someone once said: I get JOY from volunteering at the church.  Let us all find a way we can “find JOY in God’s work!”

Vacation Bible School Coming August 19 thru 22 from 5:30 - 7:30 pm

There are many ways for you to care for other by sharing Christ’s love...

This is the Church

We often wonder what the church is; why do people bother with it!  Our confirmation students and mentors last year drew two pictures of the church: one group drew the building and the other group drew all the people.  Many people see the church as a place to have Faith Milestones “taken care of”: baptism, Sunday School, First Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, Funerals. Others see the church as a place you only attend on  festival occasions like Easter and Christmas. But for others, it’s the place where we gather weekly for worship, the place where friendships are developed, where we give and receive, comfort, caring, and love in order to go out into the world to share Christ’s love with others!

Deerfield Lutheran Church at it’s best is caring, compassionate, concerned, loving.  As members and even nonmembers face health issues, loss, or stressful times or times of celebration, it is the members of our church who reach out with casseroles, warm homemade bread, cards, emails, calls, visits and lots and lots of hugs! This is the church.  The television preachers cannot do this nor do many larger churches because they do not know who their members are, but here at Deerfield Lutheran, we know and care about each other.  So, THANK  YOU  for being the church and the Hands and Feet of Christ to those in our community and beyond. This is truly what Deerfield Lutheran Church is all about:

“Called in worship to care for others by sharing Christ’s love!

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY: Is there someone you know who needs the warmth and love of a prayer shawl or lap-robe?  Let Phyllis Rude, Danielle Schultz, Debbie Sexe or the church office know. Remember this ministry can be done by you as you crochet, knit, quilt or donate money for the yarns that are used.  Check when the next crocheting and knitting time will be held so you can learn how to knit or crochet and help us with this ministry! The Shawl Ministry is an important ministry showing love, comfort and hope to those in our community. The next Crochet/Knitting Group Times are at noon in October; check calendar for Sundays. All are welcome to come.  Come and  learn how to knit or crochet, work on a project you are doing or just to visit with other members of the congregation.

There is yarn available in Arlene's corner located at the top of the stairs by the lift.

UPCOMING GRIEF SUPPORT GROUP

May 3, 10, and 17

If you have experienced the loss of a relative, friend, or special person in your life you have experienced grief.  One of the ways God helps us on our grief journeys is through the compassionate support we share with others who have experienced similar losses.  On Thursday May 3, 10 and 17 Peggy Weber who is a psychiatric nurse and grief counselor will be leading three consecutive grief support group sessions which will be held at St Patrick Catholic Church in Cottage Grove.   The group will meet  at 1:00 pm each Thursday.  There is no charge for these sessions and you need not be a member of any church in order to attend.  Please invite anyone you know who has experienced a loss to attend.

All are welcome!

Stay and visit! Everyone is cordially invited for refreshments before and after worship in the narthex. If you would like to volunteer to bring Fellowship treats, see the sign up sheet on the Opportunities Board in the narthex.  A heartfelt thank you to all who have hosted a Coffee Fellowship at Deerfield Lutheran in April. The treats have been terrific, and the fellowship truly wonderful. It is a time to get to catch up with your neighbors and to meet new people. Thank you to Roberta Fry who sets up the coffee and lemonade each week.

SUNDAY FELLOWSHIP Do you enjoy visiting with friends over a cup of coffee/tea and a treat on Sundays?  Or maybe you prefer fruit and cheese?  Could you, your family or group bring refreshments for just ONE Sunday? Each Sunday, the members of Deerfield Lutheran Church share a time of fellowship in the narthex. We share ideas and recent events of our lives with people of similar concerns and faith in God. If you would like to volunteer for this important task, see the sign up for SUNDAY HOSPITALTY TREATS on the Opportunities Board in the narthex. Thank you to all who have provided treats for our Fellowship Time.

WELCA

(Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Amercia)

All women who are confirmed members of the Deerfield Lutheran are part of this group and are placed in a circle. (An updated listing is being compiled and we are in need of your new contact information) There are various activities throughout the year you can be involved in.

As we look toward 2018, one ministry we offer to our members  is the  serving the funeral luncheon.  There is a core group of women who serve but we are looking for others who can help with this very important service that Deerfield Lutheran provides to the family who has lost a loved one.  Help us update our information by providing your phone number or email (easiest way we can contact you); let Roberta Fry or the church office know that you can help by providing a casserole, dessert, salad or help with set up, serving or clean up. What days would you be available to help serve a funeral luncheon?

The Shack by WM Paul Young. "Mackenzie Allen Philips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been                     abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered i                  is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the                              midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting                     him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack                       on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will                        change Mack's world forever. "

There are many ways for you to care for others  by sharing Christ’s love

SUNDAY – May 20th  at 9:00 am

Biking is not without its dangers while at the same time being a good form of exercise as well as being environmentally friendly.  As a way of acknowledging the inherent goodness of God’s gift of the humble but elegant bicycle/tricycle we will be conducting a Blessing of the Bicycles on Sunday, May 20th. Many of our members rely on human-powered transportation and do so while competing for road space with motorized vehicles.  Our service of blessing acknowledges our need for protection and safety as we ride.  Always remember to wear your helmet when you ride!   Bikes and trikes can be ridden or brought to worship for this blessing.

This event is open to all - whether your bike has fat or thin tires, has one, two three or four wheels. We  welcome unicyclists. We offer this blessing as a community seeking God’s blessing and protection for all who brave our streets and trails. Be with us on May 20th as we bless the bikes for a summer of fun and safe travels and adventures in God’s beautiful earth.

                                        Long Range/Short Range Planning

The 9th Long Range/Short Range Planning discussion was held Sunday, April 8, 2018 with 17 members in attendance. The next will be held on Sunday, April 29, following our worship service.

The congregation’s positive response to 2017 initiatives was noted:

general giving was $8,000 higher than in 2016, an additional $22,000 was raised through the Matthew 14 Fund drive, one of the expense items, snow plowing, was removed from the 2018 budget as the result of one household’s gift and the number of households using automatic transfer has increased. However, 2018 contributions to date are about $2,600 short of expenses – we need to continue to encourage strong and faithful support of our ministry.

Previously discussed ideas: a group is working on sale of ads for our bulletins, Echo & placemats; if we do the Ragnar Relay food stand again, serve outside off a grill and invite the congregation and community to join the runners; rather than bake sales at the Deerfield Farmer’s Market try something else, such as off-the-grill fare, also use the opportunity to inform the community about our ministries; the monthly bonfires, which are an effort to reach out to the community, will take time to develop.

Other ideas: check with certain retailers about offering a % of sales to a customer’s chosen charity; promote volunteering for Madison’s annual World’s Largest Brat Fest which will contribute $8 per hour to DLC (contact Mary Wagner at mewagner2187@gmail.com or text/call 608:347.8287. for info); continue to reach out to the broader community with opportunities for fellowship and involvement – maybe something big like a harvest dinner or wild game feed; encourage and acknowledge gifts to honor special events in the lives of loved ones, such as birthdays and anniversaries. . . what ideas do you have? Please share them with a member of the Congregation Council.
