Mission Statement:

Called in worship to care for others by sharing Christ's Love!

Truth Telling Is Painful

“How do I tell them the truth without being hating for it?” he asked. My heart went out to this young colleague with his determination to speak life-giving truth that previous pastors had avoided. To be completely honest, I said, I've been one of those pastors who avoid telling the truth so as not to be hated. But occasionally - and only because I am prodded by annoying members - I have been a reluctant truth teller. Today I find myself in the company of the first generation of clergy in centuries to whom God has given the painful task of not only loving but changing the church. When the San Damiano crucifix (I have one between my diplomas!) spoke to Francis of Assisi, it didn’t say, “Love everybody, particularly the birds.” Christ told Francis, “Rebuild my church.” That's the task! But how to do this in a post-truth world where facts are denied, and we make up our own 'truth' to suit our own short sighted needs? This is painful. How many times have I had a parishioner seek my counsel on a problem, and after listening empathetically, I foolishly say, “Have you considered doing X?” “I couldn’t do that,” comes the reply. “So and so would never allow me to do that.” I put forth a few more suggestions and hear about more excuses. Finally I say, “I can’t think of a way forward that would not require pain for you or someone else.” “I’m disappointed in you, pastor,” grumbles the parishioner on the way out. I once read in a business book that “good leaders must have a high tolerance for pain,” and foolishly thought the writer was talking about the pain the leader puts on others. But the pain that’s required is first the leader's pain. Much of the work I choose to do in ministry is work that is less painful for me than the real work the church needs me to do. Don't misunderstand - visiting people, listening, offering comfort at times of sickness or death are important - however, being a comforting presence alone is not sufficient! The promise of all false religion is comfort without pain. To which Jesus responds: What about the cross do you not get? An insight from that business book is that a real leader induces pain in the places the organization has been avoiding – in our case regular worship attendance and financial giving - in the faith that the organization will address these concerns and shape its future in more positive ways. While fund raising and volunteering have their place, our future as a church will depend on changed attitudes about how often and in what manner we worship God, and how we actually practice financial stewardship. Both subjects we avoid! Speaking to the church of his day, G. K. Chesterton said that if you love how a fence post looks and want to preserve it, you must repaint it every year. A faithful church can’t be maintained without constant care, attention, and contributions from all its members. And often the best service a pastor can offer is when we dare to prod, preach, and pray a congregation toward the painful realities it has been avoiding even if we are hated for it. Jesus Christ embodied truth as well as love, he was willing to hurt in order to heal, and there’s no way to work for him without also being willing to put people in pain in Jesus’ name.

Pastor Larry

Milestone Ministry here at Deerfield Lutheran brings an awareness of the presence of God not only to children but families and individuals of all generations through a vital partnership between home and the Congregation. The Five Principles of Milestone Ministry are that it fosters healthy faith-forming relationships; it partners home and congregation in vibrant ministry; it lifts up the home as a primary setting to be the church in the world; it allows people to experience the faith so it may be caught in daily life occasions; and it honors the role of adults in the Christian formation of children and youth. Serving as central tools to all Milestone Ministry events are the Four Keys: Caring Conversations, Devotions, Service, and Rituals and Traditions. We celebrate milestones in worship throughout the year.

CHURCH COMMUNITY GARDEN

The expanded DLC Community Garden project is underway! Thanks to a grant from the Madison Community Foundation, we have significantly increased the size and scope of this ministry, which will benefit the Community Center's senior meals program and food pantry. A good deal of organizing and work has already been done by the planning group. It is going to take a lot of volunteer time to ensure a good harvest. During the upcoming weeks the soil preparation, planting and fencing need to be done. There is a chart on the board in the narthex. Please sign up and indicate how you would like to be involved! I'll be in touch with you when your help is needed. Questions?

There are many ways for you to care for other by sharing Christ’s love...

This is the Church

We often wonder what the church is; why do people bother with it!  Our confirmation students and mentors last year drew two pictures of the church: one group drew the building and the other group drew all the people.  Many people see the church as a place to have Faith Milestones “taken care of”: baptism, Sunday School, First Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, Funerals. Others see the church as a place you only attend on  festival occasions like Easter and Christmas. But for others, it’s the place where we gather weekly for worship, the place where friendships are developed, where we give and receive, comfort, caring, and love in order to go out into the world to share Christ’s love with others!

Deerfield Lutheran Church at it’s best is caring, compassionate, concerned, loving.  As members and even nonmembers face health issues, loss, or stressful times or times of celebration, it is the members of our church who reach out with casseroles, warm homemade bread, cards, emails, calls, visits and lots and lots of hugs! This is the church.  The television preachers cannot do this nor do many larger churches because they do not know who their members are, but here at Deerfield Lutheran, we know and care about each other.  So, THANK  YOU  for being the church and the Hands and Feet of Christ to those in our community and beyond. This is truly what Deerfield Lutheran Church is all about:

WELCA

(Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Amercia)

All women who are confirmed members of the Deerfield Lutheran are part of this group and are placed in a circle. (An updated listing is being compiled and we are in need of your new contact information) There are various activities throughout the year you can be involved in.

As we look toward 2018, one ministry we offer to our members  is the  serving the funeral luncheon.  There is a core group of women who serve but we are looking for others who can help with this very important service that Deerfield Lutheran provides to the family who has lost a loved one.  Help us update our information by providing your phone number or email (easiest way we can contact you); let Roberta Fry or the church office know that you can help by providing a casserole, dessert, salad or help with set up, serving or clean up. What days would you be available to help serve a funeral luncheon?

CALLING PHOTOGRAPHS: Activities at the church go on continually. SUNDAY FELLOWSHIP Do you enjoy visiting with friends over a cup of coffee/tea and a treat on Sundays?  Or maybe you prefer fruit and cheese?  Could you, your family or group bring refreshments for just ONE Sunday? Each Sunday, the members of Deerfield Lutheran Church share a time of fellowship in the narthex. We share ideas and recent events of our lives with people of similar concerns and faith in God. If you would like to volunteer for this important task, see the sign up for SUNDAY HOSPITALTY TREATS on the Opportunities Board in the narthex. Thank you to all who have provided treats for our Fellowship Time.

CHECK OUT OUR FACEBOOK PAGE where you can keep up on events and listen to some of our musical selections, see announcements and pictures of other events. Share with your family and members who are not able to be with us.

"Mackenzie Allen Philips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been                     abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered i                  is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the                              midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting                     him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack                       on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare.                               Rev. Viviane Thomas-Breitfeld elected bishop

of the South-Central Synod of Wisconsin!

The Rev. Viviane Thomas-Breitfeld, Beloit, Wis., was elected May 6 to serve a                                         six-year term as bishop of the South-Central Synod of Wisconsin of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA). The election was held during the Synod Assembly May 5-6 at the Kalahari Resort and Convention Center in Wisconsin Dells where over 500 lay leaders and rostered ministers gathered to do the work of God’s church, participating in learning, fellowship and important voting matters. Thomas-Breitfeld was elected on the fifth ballot with 224 votes to 150 votes for the Rev. Steven Kottke, assistant to the bishop of the South-Central Synod of Wisconsin. While we recognize that this is an historic moment in the life of the ELCA in the election of the second African-descent synod bishop, (see full story in Living Lutheran - https://www.livinglutheran.org/2018/05/bishop-electsreflect-on-historic-votes/), we also recognize that the bishop-elect brings many gifts to her new leadership role and ministry. She currently serves as interim pastor of St. Paul Lutheran Church in Beloit. She served as pastor of Gethsemane Lutheran Church in Brookfield, Wis., from 2010 to 2013 and Good Shepherd in Wausau, from 1992 to 2010. Rev. Thomas-Breitfeld earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y., in 1974 and she received her Master of Divinity from McCormick Theological Seminary in Chicago in 1979. A full biography can be found on the synod website: http://scsw-elca.org/wpcontent/uploads/2018/05/Thomas-BreitfeldBio.pdf
