Mission Statement:
Called in worship to care for others by sharing Christ's Love!
Church Membership
Begin a conversation about church membership and watch people squirm. Not that people are against membership as such—Costco and Public Radio seem to be doing well. It’s because church membership seems more like eating your spinach—“at least try it before you decide you don’t like it”—-when we all know many who never “try” and seem to be doing just fine.

So what does membership really mean? Why is it important? To often we think of membership like belonging to a club where “membership has its privileges.” In our individualistic culture it’s assumed that Christian faith is just another thing you can sign on to and practice all on our own. Which leads many to being “Lone Ranger Christians” and never joining a church!

But that’s not what the Bible means by membership. In fact, in 1 Corinthians Paul doesn’t just say the church is like a body you can chose to join. He says the church is a body you are mysteriously part of. The phrase he uses is “members of the body.” Can one body part say to the other, “I’m not part of you”? No, it’s already a part of a whole where each experiences ‘wholeness.’

So why membership? Because regardless of how our culture sees it or Christians misunderstand it, membership is a sign of the organic wholeness already existing in the body of Christ we call church. We are a body.

Sadly, too many churches look more like dismembered body parts than a living body knit together. Too many “Christians” are simply “doing their own thing” without any consideration of how their selfish actions can damage the body and rob us all of that hidden wholeness we deeply need.

Therefore, we need a return to the Biblical understanding of membership. Individualist Christianity is a myth and a damaging pursuit. At the end of the day we’re redeemed together, not as isolated individuals. Membership is not for the sake of building up an institutional church or puffing us up as individuals, at the expense of others —- it’s for the sake of the world! We are joined together in the mystical body of Christ our Lord so that together we can share God’s love with others and ultimately with the whole world.

Sound exciting? Wish to learn more? If you’re interested in becoming a new member of Deerfield Lutheran, or simply would like to brush up on what church membership means, you’re invited to our New Members Classes, November 4, 11, and 18 following worship. We will receive New Members in worship on Sunday, December 2nd, as we begin the season of Advent and a new church year. Please share this with others!

Milestone Ministry here at Deerfield Lutheran brings an awareness of the presence of God not only to children but families and individuals of all generations through a vital partnership between home and the Congregation. The Five Principles of Milestone Ministry are that it fosters healthy faith-forming relationships; it partners home and congregation in vibrant ministry; it lifts up the home as a primary setting to be the church in the world; it allows people to experience the faith so it may be caught in daily life occasions; and it honors the role of adults in the Christian formation of children and youth. Serving as central tools to all Milestone Ministry events are the Four Keys: Caring Conversations, Devotions, Service, and Rituals and Traditions. We celebrate milestones in worship throughout the year.

DEERFIELD LUTHERAN CHURCH
COMMUNITY GARDEN
COMMUNITY GARDEN We are closing in on nearly 300 pounds of produce delivered to the Community Center for the food pantry and senior meals program – beans, pea pods, lettuce, kale, basil, rosemary, oregano, tomatoes, tomatillos, cucumbers, radishes, onions, carrots, peppers and squash. And there is a lot more still ripening!

Thank you to the volunteers who are stepping in to manage the harvest as the produce is ready. We continue to depend on the labor of many as we work to help feed the hungry in our community. It isn’t too late to volunteer. Weeding is no longer an issue and watering has not been for some time. For harvesting, bring a bag or two. Produce can be delivered to the Deerfield Community Center any time during their business hours – they will weigh and record the amount for us – or it may be refrigerated until it can be delivered. If you aren’t able to provide physical labor, you’re encouraged to take a look – and celebrate – this expanded ministry of ours. God’s work, our hands. – Arlie

This is the Church
We often wonder what the church is; why do people bother with it! Our confirmation students and mentors last year drew two pictures of the church: one group drew the building and the other group drew all the people. Many people see the church as a place to have Faith Milestones “taken care of”: baptism, Sunday School, First Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, Funerals. Others see the church as a place you only attend on festival occasions like Easter and Christmas. But for others, it’s the place where we gather weekly for worship, the place where friendships are developed, where we give and receive, comfort, caring, and love in order to go out into the world to share Christ’s love with others!

Deerfield Lutheran Church at it’s best is caring, compassionate, concerned, loving. As members and even nonmembers face health issues, loss, or stressful times or times of celebration, it is the members of our church who reach out with casseroles, warm homemade bread, cards, emails, calls, visits and lots and lots of hugs! This is the church. The television preachers cannot do this nor do many larger churches because they do not know who their members are, but here at Deerfield Lutheran, we know and care about each other. So, THANK YOU for being the church and the Hands and Feet of Christ to those in our community and beyond. This is truly what Deerfield Lutheran Church is all about:

“Called in worship to care for others by sharing Christ’s love!”
PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY: Is there someone you know who needs the warmth and love of a prayer shawl or lap-robe? Let Phyllis Rude, Danielle Schultz, Debbie Sexe or the church office know. Remember this ministry can be done by you as you crochet, knit, quilt or donate money for the yarns that are used. Check when the next crocheting and knitting time will be held so you can learn how to knit or crochet and help us with this ministry! The Shawl Ministry is an important ministry showing love, comfort and hope to those in our community. The next Crochet/Knitting Group Times are at noon in October; check calendar for Sundays. All are welcome to come. Come and learn how to knit or crochet, work on a project you are doing or just to visit with other members of the congregation.
There is yarn available in Arlene's corner located at the top of the stairs by the lift.
CALLING PHOTOGRAPHS: Activities at the church go on continually. Take your phone or camera and snap a picture so that we can share what is happening on Facebook, on the screen in the narthex, on our website and put in our photo-archives. Please send them to dlchurchoffice@gmail.com or to pastorsexe@gmail.com.

WELCA
(Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Amercia)
All women who are confirmed members of the Deerfield Lutheran are part of this group and are placed in a circle. (An updated listing is being compiled and we are in need of your new contact information) There are various activities throughout the year you can be involved in.
As we look toward 2018, one ministry we offer to our members is the serving the funeral luncheon. There is a core group of women who serve but we are looking for others who can help with this very important service that Deerfield Lutheran provides to the family who has lost a loved one. Help us update our information by providing your phone number or email (easiest way we can contact you); let Roberta Fry or the church office know that you can help by providing a casserole, dessert, salad or help with set up, serving or clean up. What days would you be available to help serve a funeral luncheon?

The Shack by WM Paul Young. "Mackenzie Allen Philips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered i is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting him back to that shack for a weekend. Against his better judgment he arrives at the shack on a wintry afternoon and walks back into his darkest nightmare. What he finds there will change Mack's world forever. "

GOD LIVES UNDER THE BED
I envy Kevin. My brother, Kevin, thinks God lives under his bed. At least, that's what I heard him say one night. He was praying out loud in his dark bedroom, and I stopped to listen, 'Are you there, God?', he said. 'Where are you? Oh, I see. Under the bed...'
I giggled softly and tiptoed off to my own room Kevin's unique perspectives are often a source of amusement. But that night something else lingered long after the humor. I realized for the first time the very different world Kevin lives in.
He was born 30 years ago, mentally disabled as a result of difficulties during labor. Apart from his size (he's 6-foot-2), there are few ways in which he is an adult.
He reasons and communicates with the capabilities of a 7-year-old, and he always will. He will probably always believe that God lives under his bed, that Santa Claus is the one who fills the space under our tree every Christmas and that airplanes stay up in the sky because angels carry them. I remember wondering if Kevin realizes he is different. Is he ever dissatisfied with his monotonous life?
Up before dawn each day, off to work at a workshop for the disabled, home to walk our Cocker Spaniel, return to eat his favorite macaroni-and-cheese for dinner, and later to bed.
The only variation in the entire scheme is laundry, when he hovers excitedly over the washing machine like a mother with her newborn child. He does not seem dissatisfied. He lopes out to the bus every morning at 7:05, eager for a day of simple work.
He wrings his hands excitedly while the water boils on the stove before dinner, and he stays up late twice a week to gather our dirty laundry for his next day's laundry chores.
And Saturdays. Oh, the bliss of Saturdays! That's the day my Dad takes Kevin to the airport to have a soft drink, watch the planes land, and speculate loudly on the destination of each passenger inside. 'That one's goin' to Chi-car-go! 'Kevin shouts as he claps his hands. His anticipation is so great he can hardly sleep on Friday nights.
And so goes his world of daily rituals and weekend field trips. He doesn't know what it means to be discontent. His life is simple.
He will never know the entanglements of wealth or power, and he does not care what brand of clothing he wears or what kind of food he eats. His needs have always been met. He never worries that one day they may not be.
His hands are diligent. Kevin is never happier than when he is working. When he unloads the dishwasher or vacuums the carpet, his heart is completely in it.
He does not shrink from a job when it is begun, and he does not leave a job until it is finished. When his tasks are done, Kevin knows how to relax. He is not obsessed with his work or the work of others. His heart is pure.
He still believes everyone tells the truth, promises must be kept and when you are wrong, you apologize instead of arguing.
Free from pride and unconcerned with appearances, Kevin is not afraid to cry when he is hurt, angry or sorry. He is always transparent, always sincere. And he trusts God.
Not confined by intellectual reasoning, when he comes to God, he comes as a child. Kevin seems to know God - to really be friends with Him in a way that is difficult for an 'educated' person to grasp. God is his closest companion.
In my moments of doubt and frustrations, I envy the security Kevin has in his simple faith. It is then that I am most willing to admit that he has some divine knowledge that rises above my mortal questions. It is then I realize that perhaps he is not the one with the handicap. I am.
My obligations, my fear, my pride, my circumstances - they all become disabilities when I do not trust them to God's care.
Who knows if Kevin comprehends things I can never learn? After all, he has spent his whole life in that kind of innocence, praying after dark and soaking up the goodness and love of God.
And one day, when the mysteries of heaven are opened, and we are all amazed at how close God really is to our hearts, I'll realize that God heard the simple prayers of a boy who believed that God lived under his bed. Kevin won't be surprised at all!

Everyone, please keep in mind, there is always training available for new additions to the rotation.

Additional volunteers are welcomed!
