PASTOR LARRY'S
MESSAGE

De-Cluttering Our Lives

I was telling one of you recently about how once a year my wife and our resident de-cluttering expert, Cara Lazzara, de-clutter my office.  And how what they do with my stuff – mainly books! – nudges me to engage in what I’d call an interior de-cluttering of my life.  They make me ask not only why am I reading all these books, but also what are these authors trying to tell me, what is the one thing that really matters?  And am I spending my precious time on that one thing?

In Anne Tyler’s novel, Saint Maybe, she tells the story of three children who become orphans and of their 19 year-old Uncle Ian who leaves college and sets aside the plans he had for his life in order to raise his brother and sister-in-law’s children.  It’s not easy, but as spiritual masters have always taught, it is in losing the world that Ian gains his soul.

But when the children finally leave home, Ian finds himself overwhelmed by all the clutter.  At this moment in walks Rita, an outspoken twenty-something ‘clutter counselor’ who in short order throws out 90 percent of the contents of Ian’s frig, half the contents of his attic, basement, and almost every other room. With amazing perception she recognizes the exhaustion of the lingering memories and unmade decisions represented by every item of clutter.  To everyone’s surprise Ian falls in love and marries Rita.  Why?  Maybe it’s because she returns him to the simplicity of the one thing that really matters.  That was the spiritual simplicity that had led Ian to make the radical, life-changing decision to raise his brother’s kids in the first place and in doing so discovering rewards he had never imagined.

When Jesus tells us that when he finally departs he will send us a ‘Counselor” a ‘Helper’ (John 14:16) I think he had in mind someone like Rita the ‘clutter counselor’ who will clear out of our lives all the stuff that doesn’t really matter.  After all, Jesus spent all his time on the one thing that really did matter: us.

I have been at the bedside of those who knew their time here was soon coming to an end.  In all those conversations I have never heard anyone say, Pastor I wish I had spent more time accumulating stuff and figuring out what to do with it.  What I have heard expressed in various ways is this: I wish I had spent more time with the ones I love or perhaps learning what it means to love by first accepting God’s love.

Maybe today is the right time to honestly face two important questions, “What’s that one thing that really matters in life?” and “Why aren’t you filling most of your time with that?”  Maybe now is the time to call for Rita (Holy Spirit, Clutter-Counselor) who can help us clear out all that doesn’t really matter, and nudge us gently but seriously to spend our time and energy on the one thing that really does.

Welcome Angie Williams!

As Our New Church Secretary!

We're very delighted to welcome Angie Williams as our new Church Secretary.  Many of you are familiar with Angie as a pianist for our worship services as well as our DLC Choir Director. Angie, her husband Les and son Jacob live in Deerfield and are very active in our community. Many of you may not know that Angie is also a member of the Sweet Adelines International and the Yahara Chorus, where she is an education planner as well as webmaster.  She is also a member of the award winning 'By Request' quartet. Please welcome Angie to her new position!

Ragnar Concession Stand Volunteers Needed!!!

June 9th

Our church parking lot is again being used as a relay site for the Madison to Chicago Ragnar on June 9th.  We will be offering concessions to runners and spectators throughout the day with proceeds going to the church.  We are looking for people that can volunteer some of their time to help with concessions - grilling and selling.  There is a sign up sheet for 2 hour time slots during the day on the 9th located on the church boards, or you can email Jen Lees if you can help out at all during the day.

We are also looking for people to donate crock pots of cheesy hashbrowns or mac'n'cheese that we will sell throughout the day.  If you would like to donate money to help cover some of the initial food expense so that more profits go to the church that would be very welcome as well.  Contact Jen Lees (jjlees1@charter.net) or Jenn Brattlie (jennhabs@msn.com) with questions or to sign up for anything!

THANK YOU CELEBRATION FOR LAURA!

A church secretary has an important connection to the life of the church. On June 4th we will celebrate ten years of faithful service by Laura Connor as our Church Secretary. Laura knows the people, the ministries and the events that are part of the life of Deerfield Lutheran Church. So many different jobs around the office and the church, many of which you never see but need to be done, have been done by Laura. When someone needed to be covered at the last minute in worship, Laura was there! Laura’s integrity, discretion, and humility has not gone unnoticed. Laura is resigning from the job of church secretary to simplify her schedule and take more hours with her other employment. We will still see Laura playing and singing in the bells, choir, and Promised Band and at worship. On June 4th, let us take time to thank her for her ten years of service!

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU TO MY DLC FAMILY

While I have truly enjoyed my 10 years & 7 months as Deerfield Lutheran Secretary, I have decided to simplify my schedule. I no longer have the flexibility for the church office work that I had in my early years working only here and with my direct sales business. Now I have decided to take more hours at Grimm Book Bindery office and resign from the DLC Secretary position. I am grateful to have Angie Williams in place to overlap so I can pass on some knowledge of the 127 newsletters, 600+ bulletins, arranging countless wonderful volunteers, managing countless emails, coordinating information, etc…

Thank you to the DLC staff, many volunteers, ever changing council and committee members who have made this experience enjoyable.

Most of all, I am also so very appreciative of Pastor Larry and Debbie Sexe who both do so much for our church and community!

See you at Worship and Around Town!

Sincerely, Laura Connor

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY: Is there someone you know who needs the warmth and love of a prayer shawl or lap-robe? Let Phyllis Rude, Debbie Sexe or the church office know. Remember this ministry can be none by you as you crochet, knit, quilt or donate money for the yarns that are used. There are patterns available in the narthex to get you started! Check when the next Knit/Crochet Club time will be held so you can learn how to knit or crochet and help us with this ministry! The Shawl Ministry is an important ministry showing love, comfort and hope to those in our community.

Next Gatherings: June 4 and June 18

There is yarn available in Arlene's corner located at the top of the stairs by the lift.

Challenge Fund..

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO BE “THE HANDS AND FEET FOR CHRIST” HERE AT DEERFIELD LUTHERAN! There are many opportunities! Get involved with our expanding Community Garden. There is planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting that can be done. Make it a Family Affair! There will be opportunities to help at concessions stands sponsored by the DLC beginning with the Ragnar Relay Friday, June 9th as well as other times throughout the summer. Will you be available to help with VBS? Let us know so you can be part of this fun activity!

There are many ways for you to care for other by sharing Christ’s love...

This is the Church

We often wonder what the church is; why do people bother with it!  Our confirmation students and mentors last year drew two pictures of the church: one group drew the building and the other group drew all the people.  Many people see the church as a place to have Faith Milestones “taken care of”: baptism, Sunday School, First Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, Funerals. Others see the church as a place you only attend on  festival occasions like Easter and Christmas. But for others, it’s the place where we gather weekly for worship, the place where friendships are developed, where we give and receive, comfort, caring, and love in order to go out into the world to share Christ’s love with others!

Deerfield Lutheran Church at it’s best is caring, compassionate, concerned, loving.  As members and even nonmembers face health issues, loss, or stressful times or times of celebration, it is the members of our church who reach out with casseroles, warm homemade bread, cards, emails, calls, visits and lots and lots of hugs! This is the church.  The television preachers cannot do this nor do many larger churches because they do not know who their members are, but here at Deerfield Lutheran, we know and care about each other.  So, THANK  YOU  for being the church and the Hands and Feet of Christ to those in our community and beyond. This is truly what Deerfield Lutheran Church is all about:

“Called in worship to care for others by sharing Christ’s love!

IT'S TIME FOR ACTION!

The LET'S KEEP TALKING DISCUSSIONS

The 6th in our series of LET'S KEEP TALKING discussions about short and long-term plans to support and shape our ministry was held Sunday, May 21st with short-term fundraising initiatives reviewed. The Matthew 14 Fund is now in progress. Brent Brattlie, Sue Neath and Jerry Brown are making arrangements for the sale of ads for items such as bulletin or ECHO inserts and placemats. Darlene Thorstad will coordinate a couple bake sales at the summer Farmer’s Market held in our parking lot. We are selling concessions for participants in the Ragnar Relay on Friday, June 9. Proceeds will be applied to our general fund and we will provide indoor service and seating this year. Volunteers are needed to cover shifts as well as donations of/or cash contributions for food items. A sign-up sheet is posted in the narthex, or you may contact Jen Lees (345-2777) or Jenn Brattlie (712-1768) to volunteer.

Since the initial call to action three months ago, general offerings have increased, as has the number of households using automatic transfer for giving– both promising signs for our future financial resources.

As importantly, several new opportunities for ministry and outreach have been and are being developed. Among them are the community fellowship fires, hosted by Brad and Darcy Schenkel and held the first Saturday evening of the month (through October). The initial event was held May 6th, and was a great start. The next will be on June 3rd. Bring your family, friends and neighbors – as well as a few hot dogs and s’mores fixings! A new Youth Worship Service, featuring opportunities for youth leadership, is being initiated by Jen Lees and Jenn Brattlie and the parent’s group. The 45-minute service will be held the first Sunday each month at 10:30.
