Mission Statement:

Called in worship to care for others by sharing Christ's Love!

The season of Lent is 40 days not including Sundays. It is a time for self-reflection, prayer and fasting.  It is a  time to think about those who suffer in our communities and world today.  As we prepare for the resurrection on Easter, Lent is a time for Lutherans and all Christians to think about repentance,  Jesus’ suffering and death on the cross.

Lenten Soup Suppers are not far away!

Ash Wednesday is February 14th  and the Weekly Soup Suppers begin Wednesday, February 21st.

LENTEN SOUP SUPPERS ARE NOT FAR AWAY!

On our Lenten Journey we gather on Wednesday evenings for a simple soup and bread supper followed by a  drama and the Holden Evening Prayer Service. We gather in the church basement on Wednesdays from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m., February 21 through March 21.  Dinner will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the fellowship hall followed by Evening Prayer Service and Drama at 6:00pm.  All are welcome to come to the evening’s events. Please set aside these dates on your calendar and join us in prayer and fellowship as we prepare for the celebration of Christ’s resurrection at Easter.

CONFIRMATION STUDENTS ARE ENCOURAGED TO ATTEND ALL LENTEN SOUP MEALS AND WORSHIP SERVICES.

We encourage you to participate by being part of the drama play or making a pot of homemade soup, bread or rolls or a dessert and bringing it to the fellowship hall.  As with any church event, we can always use help with set up and clean up. The sign-up sheet to provide food and also to serve and clean up is posted on the bulletin board in the fellowship hall.  This is an opportunity to connect with each other and share our Lenten Journey. Look for the sign-up sheet on the Opportunities to Serve Bulletin Board.

REMEMBER ASH WEDNESDAY SERVICE is February 14th at 6:00 pm!

A Truth That Changes Us

During the time of the Czar a Jewish leader called the old Rabbi found himself imprisoned on false charges and it took him several months in one of the Czarist jails before he could prove his innocence. One day the jail keeper came to him and said, "I understand you're a Rabbi and a learned man so may I ask you a question?"  Rabbi says, "Of course, ask anything you want."

Jail keeper says, "I'm not a believer, but I have a lot of friends who are and they're always telling me to read the Bible.  It's a very wise book; it'll be a guide to my life.  So the other day I sat down to read it, and I must tell you, I'm not impressed.  I mean right here on the third page of the Bible it describes God asking Adam, 'Where are you?' Now really, what kind of question is that?  One man in the whole world and God can't find him?"

The Rabbi smiles and says, "No, you misunderstood the story.  God doesn't ask Adam. 'Where are you?' because God needs to know where Adam is - God knows!  It's because Adam needs to ask himself, where am I?  Then the Rabbis turns to the jail keeper and says, "You're 45 years old.  'Where are you?"  When the jail keeper heard the Rabbi identify precisely how old he was, he was taken aback, and he had to go back and reopen some questi

In other words, the trial before the Jewish Sanhedrin and the Roman Governor Pilate near the end are anticipated throughout the entire gospel.  John wants us to see afresh the evidence for Jesus (who he is as Truth!) as well as the case made against him.  The same "trial" goes on today in the hearts and minds of those who take the time to listen to the evidence.

I originally wrote these plays during the time of President Clinton’s impeachment trial. Our laws and judicial proceedings are based on the Judeo Christian understanding of the rule of law.  However, as we are painfully aware, the law that is meant to protect us from falsehood can be misused by those in power to obscure or cover up the truth.  In the case of Jesus of Nazareth the law he came to fulfill was turned against him.  Yet, in the end, it is no longer Jesus who is on trial, but we are, each one of us who hears the evidence for Jesus and must decide for or against him.

I hope you will enjoy these plays.  Once again we'll have sign up sheets in the narthex for actors, bread bakers, and soup makers.  The schedule for our midweek worship is as follows:

ons he had previously thought he had satisfactorily closed in his mind.  There were attitudes and behaviors in his life that he needed to look at again with new eyes and in the light of God’s truth, change.

The Irish rock star and activist, Bono, speaks of his life being changed by the truth this way: “Our nature is a hard thing to change; it takes time...I have heard of people who have life changing, miraculous turnarounds, people set free from addiction after a single prayer, relationships saved where both parties ‘let go and let God’. But it was not like that for me. For all that say ‘I was lost, now I am found,’ it’s probably more accurate to say, ‘I was really lost. I’m a little less so at the moment.’ And then a little less and a little less again. That to me is the spiritual life where I have been slowly rebuilt into a better image. It has taken years, though, and it is not over yet.”

When Bono talks about being rebuilt into a better image he's referring to the Bible where in Genesis we’re told we’re made ‘in the image of God,’ but because of human sin that image has been distorted.  That image needs to be rebuilt into what God intended it to be in the beginning.  The way Bono has gone about this rebuilding in his own life is to read the Bible with other Christians.  He's been doing that for years.  The Bible is where truth confronts us, as we read it together.

"Truth On Trial" will be the theme for our midweek Lenten Soup Suppers this year.  Based on the Gospel of John these plays take seriously the view that John's entire gospel is best viewed through the lens of Jewish Law as a rather long trial.

Milestone Ministry here at Deerfield Lutheran brings an awareness of the presence of God not only to children but families and individuals of all generations through a vital partnership between home and the Congregation. The Five Principles of Milestone Ministry are that it fosters healthy faith-forming relationships; it partners home and congregation in vibrant ministry; it lifts up the home as a primary setting to be the church in the world; it allows people to experience the faith so it may be caught in daily life occasions; and it honors the role of adults in the Christian formation of children and youth. Serving as central tools to all Milestone Ministry events are the Four Keys: Caring Conversations, Devotions, Service, and Rituals and Traditions. We celebrate milestones in worship throughout the year.

KAIR Activities

Families are invited to participate in the potluck and advent wreath making on December 3rd at 11:00 (see additional information in the ECHO).  Or, if there are kids that would like to help facilitate the event and help others in the project they are certainly welcome.

KAIR breakfasts have been a great opportunity for the kids to get together and share some food, along with what's going on in their lives.  We do a quick devotional and prayer and get them off to school.  December's breakfast will be sponsored by the Fisher family on December 22nd at 7:00.  Kids should dress in the holiday spirit!

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO BE “THE HANDS AND FEET FOR CHRIST” HERE AT DEERFIELD LUTHERAN! There are many opportunities! Get involved with our expanding Community Garden. There is planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting that can be done. Make it a Family Affair! There will be opportunities to help at concessions stands sponsored by the DLC beginning with the Ragnar Relay Friday, June 9th as well as other times throughout the summer. Will you be available to help with VBS? Let us know so you can be part of this fun activity!

There are many ways for you to care for other by sharing Christ’s love...

This is the Church

We often wonder what the church is; why do people bother with it!  Our confirmation students and mentors last year drew two pictures of the church: one group drew the building and the other group drew all the people.  Many people see the church as a place to have Faith Milestones “taken care of”: baptism, Sunday School, First Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, Funerals. Others see the church as a place you only attend on  festival occasions like Easter and Christmas. But for others, it’s the place where we gather weekly for worship, the place where friendships are developed, where we give and receive, comfort, caring, and love in order to go out into the world to share Christ’s love with others!

Deerfield Lutheran Church at it’s best is caring, compassionate, concerned, loving.  As members and even nonmembers face health issues, loss, or stressful times or times of celebration, it is the members of our church who reach out with casseroles, warm homemade bread, cards, emails, calls, visits and lots and lots of hugs! This is the church.  The television preachers cannot do this nor do many larger churches because they do not know who their members are, but here at Deerfield Lutheran, we know and care about each other.  So, THANK  YOU  for being the church and the Hands and Feet of Christ to those in our community and beyond. This is truly what Deerfield Lutheran Church is all about:

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY: Is there someone you know who needs the warmth and love of a prayer shawl or lap-robe?  Let Phyllis Rude, Danielle Schultz, Debbie Sexe or the church office know. Remember this ministry can be done by you as you crochet, knit, quilt or donate money for the yarns that are used.  Check when the next crocheting and knitting time will be held so you can learn how to knit or crochet and help us with this ministry! The Shawl Ministry is an important ministry showing love, comfort and hope to those in our community. The next Crochet/Knitting Group Times are at noon in October; check calendar for Sundays. All are welcome to come.  Come and  learn how to knit or crochet, work on a project you are doing or just to visit with other members of the congregation.

There is yarn available in Arlene's corner located at the top of the stairs by the lift.

CALLING PHOTOGRAPHS: Activities at the church go on continually. Take your phone or camera and snap a picture so that we can share what is happening on Facebook, on the screen in the narthex, on our website and put in our photo-archives. Please send them to dlchurchoffice@gmail.com or to pastorsexe@gmail.com.

UPCOMING EVENTS

Book (& Movie) Club For Lent

If you love to read or see movies based on great books, this club is for you! Every Sunday in Lent (Feb 18, 25, March 4, 11, 18), we will gather after worship outside Pastor’s study to talk about about a couple classic novels written by women that have also been made into movies we can watch.

A Wrinkle In Time by Anglican author Madeleine L’Engle weaves Christian themes                                       and theology into a great adventure for both adults and young adults to read                                              together. In March a film of this book will be released and we can go to see it!

Emma by Jane Austen. Although two hundred years have passed since Austin wrote this novel,                 her ability to probe the complex psychology of self-deception makes her one of the greatest                   novelists of all time! Emma has a bad habit of manipulating relationships at other’s expense, a                habit her friend and brother-in-law Mr. Knightley, does not approve. His honest words become a mirror Emma does not want to look into but must! Austen’s novel is a kind of truth-telling friend who helps us all do a little self-reflection. We will watch the 1996 movie which stars Gwyneth Paltrow as Emma. (If you’re really into this novel there is also the 2009 mini-series available on DVD or Netflix.)

SOUPER BOWL OF CARING SUNDAY – FEBRUARY 4TH

It is SOUPER BOWL of CARING SUNDAY, February 4th at Deerfield Lutheran.  The KAIR group (Kids Active in Religion—Middle/High Schoolers) will be collecting dollars and also non-perishable items for our local food pantry. This is part of a nation wide group that transformed Super Bowl weekend into the nation's largest youth-led weekend of giving and serving, and fighting hunger and poverty in their local communities.

BOY SCOUT SUNDAY

is  February 4th

Our set of Malmark Handbells are now going on 18 years old. The first three octaves were donated to Deerfield Lutheran by Donovan Osterlie in 2001 in memorial of his wife Marian who lost her life in an automobile accident in December of 2000. Since then several members donated the upper half of the 4th octave in May of 2007. The handbells have not only been used during worship services at Deerfield Lutheran, but have been used for:

• Bel Canto Choir and the Country Chordsmen at several community concerts.

• Worship services at St. Paul Lutheran Church.

• Deerfield High School - Students have rehearsed and performed with the handbells every winter and spring for Solo and Ensemble competitions.

The bells are truly an instrument of our community. So, with the age and use of the bells, the handles are cracking, the bronze castings are a bit less brilliant and they are somewhat out of tune. We need to raise the funds necessary to pay for the refurbishing of the bells by the manufacturer.

To pay for the refurbishing, the Deerfield Lutheran Handbell Choir is having a                                                                            lasagna dinner and musical program at Deerfield Lutheran Church. The date of the                                                                  event is Saturday February 17th. Dinner to be served at 5:30 pm and music to start                                                                   at 7:00 pm. Tickets are available for $15/person for dinner and music. Help is also                                                                     needed to prepare, serve and cleanup after the meal.

We, also want and need additional musical performances by ANYONE who would                                                                      like to perform! Tickets and help sign up are available after church in the Narthex.                                                                    Please also contact Jeff Quamme (608-576-6671) for tickets, to sign up to help, or                                                                      for musical performances.
