I

                                                                                                                    October 21, 2018

Dear President Schenkel and Members of Deerfield Lutheran Congregational

Council,

It has been over twenty-five years since I accepted your call to

serve as Pastor of Deerfield Lutheran Church.   Twenty-five years ago I

was not even “open” to a new call to a different congregation, but one of

DLC’s members, Floyd Winchel, had given my name to then Bishop Jon

Enslin.  I still recall our conversation.  Bishop Enslin calls me out of the blue and asks if I’d consider interviewing for a call. Since my mom had just lost her home in a terrible flood weeks before, and the year before we had lost my dad to cancer, I said, “no.”  He went on, “You might want to reconsider. I just fetched your name out of my waste basket.”  That morning for reasons he could not adequately explain he felt the need to look through his trash.  There he found the note he had written with my name on it. “Perhaps,” he said, “the Holy Spirit is trying to tell us something.”  Well, how do you say “no” after that.  So Deb and I came to Deerfield thinking we’d do the polite thing and interview but that would be the end of it. I can say twenty-five years later that happily for us that was not the case.  Those who see things differently can blame Floyd, Jon, and the Holy Spirit!  But seriously, the years we have been privileged to serve this congregation have enriched our lives in ways it is difficult to put into words.  And yes, I do believe the Holy Spirit brought us to Deerfield!

This letter is to inform you that I now believe the same Holy Spirit is leading both Deb and I to our next chapter in ministry - retirement. Years ago I recall a much older colleague say, “when you see yourself coming around the same corner, it’s time for you to go!”  He meant that when you feel you’re no longer able to facilitate the change every organization needs in order to grow, it’s time for new leadership, a fresh voice.  It really concerns me that I am the only preacher many of you have heard for twenty-five years!  You deserve to hear a fresh perspective on the “good news.”  But also know this - as I have told many of you - no one ever “retires” from our baptismal call to ministry until the day we die! While I do intend to take what I’m calling my “year outdoors” I will still continue as Vice-President of Wisconsin Faith Voices For Justice.  My “new call” is to continue working for inter-faith understanding, cooperation, and collaborative action on serious matters of social justice.

I have informed the Office of Bishop Viviane Thomas-Brietfeld of the South-Central Synod of Wisconsin, as well as Portico Benefit Services of the ELCA, of my intention to officially retire on December 31, 2018.  However, my final Sunday at Deerfield Lutheran will be December 2nd. I will use my remaining vacation days which include four Sundays to complete the month of December.  Rev Steven Kottke of our synod staff is available to meet with you in the days ahead to answer your questions about the exit process as well as how pastoral ministry will continue (including pulpit supply) in the transition time until the decision is made about calling a new pastor.

It has been a joy to serve with you these past twenty-five years!  May God richly bless you in this transition time as the Holy Spirit - who works in ways we cannot adequately explain - breathes new life into Deerfield Lutheran Church!

Always Yours In Christ!

Pr. Larry L. Sexe

To All God's Beloved In Deerfield, Who Are Called To Be Saints

Grace to you from the God made known in Jesus Christ! By the time you read this article two things will have happened.  First, you will have celebrated “All Saints' Day” - the feast where we remember all the saints who have gone before us in faith.  I believe we all have our own personal 'communion of saints' - that great cloud of invisible witnesses who accompany us and encourage us on all our journeys.

Second, you will have been informed of my decision to resign as pastor of DLC and to begin a new journey called retirement!  (see attached letter to President Darcy Schenkel and DLC Congregational Council.)

It has been my privilege to serve as your pastor for over twenty-five years and along with Debbie, and our daughters, Elizabeth and Kari, to share in the mission and ministry of Deerfield Lutheran Church in so many delightful ways.  But let's be clear, that mission and ministry does not end with our departure.  It will continue in exciting ways as you receive the benefits of revitalization and new leadership!

However, there are some things you need to be aware of as you begin.  In the weeks prior to my departure Rev Steve Kottke, the assistant to Bishop Viviane Thomas-Brietfeld, will be guiding you through an exit process.  In this interim period, when I will still be visiting the sick, preaching, presiding at the Eucharist, teaching classes, etc., it will be inappropriate for me to be involved in decisions regarding future ministry plans.  Those decisions can and will be made by your elected Congregational Counsel and the Bishop of the South Central Synod of Wisconsin.  It will also be inappropriate for other clergy, unless authorized by Bishop Viviane Thomas-Brietfeld, to intrude in this process.  You the members of DLC are the ones who will be called upon to make crucial plans for future ministry and you will do so with the guidance of our Bishop.

With my resignation I also give back to the congregation the office of pastor and the title which goes with it.  After December 2nd  “your pastor” will be the clergy who serve you in an interim capacity until that title is finally bestowed on the person you call as your new pastor!

Perhaps hardest will be the necessity for me and my family to be absent from worship services, funerals, weddings, and other congregational gatherings we have attended for twenty-five years.  Deb and I will be transferring our membership to a congregation outside our immediate area.  While we will still keep a home in Deerfield, we will also be spending time in Black River Falls, our hometown.  As I stated in my letter of resignation, I will also be involved in the Statewide ministry of Wisconsin Faith Voices For Justice which I currently serve as Vice-President.

While I will miss you, I also know God does not leave and of us alone, we're surrounded by an invisible cloud of witnesses who give us the encouragement we need to continue our journeys until we reach our final goal where (as the Salvation Army says) we are promoted to glory as we ourselves join that vast cloud of witnesses who encourage others.

Milestone Ministry here at Deerfield Lutheran  brings an awareness of the presence of God not only to children but families and individuals of all generations through a vital partnership between home and the Congregation. The Five Principles of Milestone Ministry are that it fosters healthy faith-forming relationships; it partners home and congregation in vibrant ministry; it lifts up the home as a primary setting to be the church in the world; it allows people to experience the faith so it may be caught in daily life occasions; and it honors the role of adults in the Christian formation of children and youth. We Celebrate Milestones in worship throughout the year.

At Baptism everyone receives a Milestone Faith Chest. A Faith Chest is a chest hand made by our church members headed by David Shea and Gary Borgrud. It is a Chest that you can add memorabilia, special notes, special things that has helped you grow in your faith.   On November 11th Scarlet Nelson, the daughter of Kurtis and Krystle Nelson, will be baptized.

Serving as central tools to all Milestones Ministry events are the Four Keys: Caring Conversations, Devotions, Service, and Rituals and Traditions. On October 28th Reformation Sunday, the Spark Bible  was presented to our Third Graders.  Parents placed in the hands of their child the Word of God a Spark Bible NRSV which is designed to “Spark” a relationship with God.  The Third graders who received their Spark Bibles were:  Tia Lynn Anderson, Libby Marie Fisher,  Isabella Theresa Kelly Swain, Brayden Jeffrey Halverson, Addison Claire Haas.

Fourth graders from Deerfield Lutheran Church celebrated another Milestone in their Faith Journey on Sunday, October 21, 2018. Having received instruction in the belief and understanding of the Sacrament of Holy Communion Brady Matthew Fleming, Ellie Lynn Gottschalk, Kimura Elaine Segerson-Hutter, and Lydia Rai Segerson-Hutter received First Communion with family and friends using chalices they had made and communion bread  baked at Jerry Schultz’s home for this special occasion. A Special thank you Melissa Owens and Chelsea Strauss who worked on this  Milestone.

Milestone Ministry helps to encourage characteristics for Christians as disciples who are authentic, available, and affirming. It is through this ministry that the church can grow by growing people in faith.

On All Saints Day, November 4th we remember those who have died in our congregation since last year:

Phillip Earl Zibell

Violet L.”Vi’ “Daisy” Cholka

Glenn D. Douglas

Sanford Michael  Dahl

Arlene Shirley  Failing

Gordon E. Gottschalk

Paul Berge Thorstad

LOOKING FOR MEMBERS -

There are many ways for you to care for other by sharing Christ’s love...

This is the Church

We often wonder what the church is; why do people bother with it!  Our confirmation students and mentors last year drew two pictures of the church: one group drew the building and the other group drew all the people.  Many people see the church as a place to have Faith Milestones “taken care of”: baptism, Sunday School, First Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, Funerals. Others see the church as a place you only attend on  festival occasions like Easter and Christmas. But for others, it’s the place where we gather weekly for worship, the place where friendships are developed, where we give and receive, comfort, caring, and love in order to go out into the world to share Christ’s love with others!

Deerfield Lutheran Church at it’s best is caring, compassionate, concerned, loving.  As members and even nonmembers face health issues, loss, or stressful times or times of celebration, it is the members of our church who reach out with casseroles, warm homemade bread, cards, emails, calls, visits and lots and lots of hugs! This is the church.  The television preachers cannot do this nor do many larger churches because they do not know who their members are, but here at Deerfield Lutheran, we know and care about each other.  So, THANK  YOU  for being the church and the Hands and Feet of Christ to those in our community and beyond. This is truly what Deerfield Lutheran Church is all about:

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY: Is there someone you know who needs the warmth and love of a prayer shawl or lap-robe?  Let Phyllis Rude, Danielle Schultz, Debbie Sexe or the church office know. Remember this ministry can be done by you as you crochet, knit, quilt or donate money for the yarns that are used.  Check when the next crocheting and knitting time will be held so you can learn how to knit or crochet and help us with this ministry! The Shawl Ministry is an important ministry showing love, comfort and hope to those in our community. The next Crochet/Knitting Group Times are at noon in October; check calendar for Sundays. All are welcome to come.  Come and  learn how to knit or crochet, work on a project you are doing or just to visit with other members of the congregation.

There is yarn available in Arlene's corner located at the top of the stairs by the lift.

CALLING PHOTOGRAPHS: Activities at the church go on continually. Take your phone or camera and snap a picture so that we can share what is happening on Facebook, on the screen in the narthex, on our website and put in our photo-archives. SUNDAY FELLOWSHIP Do you enjoy visiting with friends over a cup of coffee/tea and a treat on Sundays?  Or maybe you prefer fruit and cheese?  Could you, your family or group bring refreshments for just ONE Sunday? Each Sunday, the members of Deerfield Lutheran Church share a time of fellowship in the narthex. We share ideas and recent events of our lives with people of similar concerns and faith in God. If you would like to volunteer for this important task, see the sign up for SUNDAY HOSPITALTY TREATS on the Opportunities Board in the narthex. Thank you to all who have provided treats for our Fellowship Time.

Thank You!

WELCA

(Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Amercia)

All women who are confirmed members of the Deerfield Lutheran are part of this group and are placed in a circle. (An updated listing is being compiled and we are in need of your new contact information) There are various activities throughout the year you can be involved in.

As we look toward 2018, one ministry we offer to our members  is the  serving the funeral luncheon.  There is a core group of women who serve but we are looking for others who can help with this very important service that Deerfield Lutheran provides to the family who has lost a loved one.  Help us update our information by providing your phone number or email (easiest way we can contact you); let Roberta Fry or the church office know that you can help by providing a casserole, dessert, salad or help with set up, serving or clean up. What days would you be available to help serve a funeral luncheon?
