Mission Statement:

Called in worship to care for others by sharing Christ's Love!

Intentional Giving

“Now it is not necessary for me to write you about the ministry to the saints, for I know your eagerness, which is the subject of my boasting about you to the people of Macedonia, saying that Achaia has been ready since last year; and your zeal has stirred up most of them. But I am sending the brothers in order that our boasting about you may not prove to have been empty in this case, so that you may be ready, as I said you would be; otherwise, if some Macedonians come with me and find that you are not ready, we would be humiliated—to say nothing of you—in this undertaking. So I thought it necessary to urge the brothers to go on ahead to you, and arrange in advance for this bountiful gift that you have promised, so that it may be ready as a voluntary gift and not as an extortion.” 2 Corinthians 9:1-5

“Now concerning the collection for the saints: you should follow the directions I gave to the churches of Galatia. On the first day of every week, each of you is to put aside and save whatever extra you earn, so that collections need not be taken when I come.” 1 Corinthians 16:1-2

In both his letters to the Corinthian Christians, Paul asks that they prepare their financial gifts ahead of time, that they be intentional about setting aside their gifts on a weekly basis so that they are ready when it is time to give.

When we establish a family budget we are acknowledging what a friend’s mother always said, “Money doesn’t grow on trees.” As a single mother raising four kids, she needed a spending plan to stretch her meager income as far as it would go. Establishing a family budget is also an exercise in establishing priorities. The bills at the top of the list are the most essential; those at the bottom are the extras we might or might not be able to afford this year. Where we put our giving says much about where we invest our lives, where we put our hearts.

Investment gurus teach us, “Pay yourself first.” The Bible, with its assumption of “first fruits” giving, would argue that giving comes first. Each of us, when setting up our family budgets (in itself a crucial aspect of faithful stewardship and wise money management) must, as Paul has told us, make up our minds, “not reluctantly or under compulsion” about the place we will give to our giving.

Is my giving intentional and consistent?

Most charitable organizations, from public television to congregations, conduct annual “pledge drives.” These are efforts to encourage supporters to do what Paul is asking, to plan their charitable giving ahead of time by making an estimate of giving. They have learned that people are able to be far more generous in their giving than they initially think if their giving is budgeted, regular and consistently given.

l 'm suggesting that Christians include their congregational family in their thinking as they consider their own family budgeting – their congregational family as an extension of their nuclear family, the mission of their congregation as an extension of their own personal and family callings to make a positive difference in the world. Consider how giving fits in our lives ‘on purpose’ rather than picking a number out of the blue, or giving out of what is left, or reaching for the checkbook as the plates come down the aisle. “Mindfulness” and “discipline” are aspects of our spirituality in all areas of our lives, including our giving.

Two numbers: what do we bring home and what do we give? Four questions: What percentage of our income are we giving away? Is that current level of giving sacrificial or trivial? Do we feel good about what we give? Are we planning our giving ahead of time and are we consistent?

An honest assessment of these questions can remove the guilt from our giving and unleash our God-given potential as faithful and generous stewards. Maybe a family discovers they have been giving less than 1% of their income and they don’t feel good about that – they might consider doubling that in a year, growing toward tithing (10%) a few more years down the road. Another family might discover that the budgeting necessary to get their giving lives in order actually helps them set the priorities that get their general financial lives in order.

In all of this, remember that Paul’s teaching would ultimately find its place in a great effort of relief to the saints in Jerusalem – just as our financial giving brings blessings far beyond ourselves and our congregation.

Let us pray: Gracious Lord, guide us in looking more intentionally at our own personal patterns of giving and spending. Help us, even in the face of financial difficulties and seasons of hardship, to look beyond ourselves and our own needs and desires to the ministry we share through our local communities of faith. In Jesus’ name. Amen.

KAIR Activities

KAiR Breakfast

Friday September 28th at 7:00 am at the church

Kids 6th-12th grade are welcome to join us for our 1st monthly Kids Acting In Religion breakfast of the 2018-2019 school year. Put down your phones, catch up with friends, and eat some good food.

We are kicking off the school year choosing Words of Intent. Start thinking about the answers to questions like these: what are your goals for the year, how are you feeling about the new year, what makes you happy, what do you want to improve upon, what makes you, you? Now, what one word, would serve as a daily reminder, would help you answer those questions or help you achieve what you seek?

Sunday, Sept. 9, 2018

Together in Jesus Christ we are freed by grace to live faithfully, witness boldly and serve joyfully. Mark your congregation’s calendar today! The date for the 2018 “God’s work. Our hands” Sunday is Sept. 9.

Since 2013, thousands of ELCA congregations have participated in this dedicated day of service, gathering to serve communities in ways that share the love of God with all of God’s people. The event has quickly become an anticipated way to be “church together” and “church for the sake of the world.”

Here at Deerfield Lutheran we will give you the opportunity to work in our community garden that has been providing fresh produce for the Community Center Food Pantry as well as senior meals. For those who can’t work outdoors, there are thank-you notes to emergency responders or volunteers that can be written. These and other service activities offer an opportunity for us to explore one of our most basic convictions as Lutherans:

All of life in Jesus Christ – every act of service, in every daily

calling, in every corner of life – flows freely from a living,

daring confidence in God’s grace.

“God’s work. Our hands.” Sunday is an opportunity to celebrate who we are as the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) – one church, freed in Christ to serve and love our neighbor. You work every day to make your community a better place. Let’s do this work together.

Milestone Ministry here at Deerfield Lutheran brings an awareness of the presence of God not only to children but families and individuals of all generations through a vital partnership between home and the Congregation. The Five Principles of Milestone Ministry are that it fosters healthy faith-forming relationships; it partners home and congregation in vibrant ministry; it lifts up the home as a primary setting to be the church in the world; it allows people to experience the faith so it may be caught in daily life occasions; and it honors the role of adults in the Christian formation of children and youth. Serving as central tools to all Milestone Ministry events are the Four Keys: Caring Conversations, Devotions, Service, and Rituals and Traditions. We celebrate milestones in worship throughout the year.

Changes Coming to Confirmation

It has been ten years since the confirmation program at DLC has seen changes, and with the input of several parents of current and future confirmation students, we are excited to introduce the following changes for the 2018-2019 confirmation year.

1. Elimination of the 9th grade confirmation class year. Confirmation students will be confirmed at the end of their 8th grade year.

2. All grades will have two modules of lessons (October to Thanksgiving and January to Lent).

3. 5th grade students will no longer participate in classes on Sunday but will instead attend a half hour class at 5:00 on Monday nights bi-weekly with Pastor focusing on exploring the Bible.

4. 6th grade students will have class bi-weekly on Monday nights opposite the 5th graders and focus on the Lord’s Prayer. Parents of 6th graders will continue to attend class with their child.

5. 7th grade students will attend class from 6:30 – 7:30 on Wednesday nights with focus on the Ten Commandments and the Creed.

6. 8th (and 9th grade students this year only) will attend class from 7:30-8:30 on Wednesday nights following an online Alpha Course during the first module and then will finish the Alpha Course at the beginning of the second module along with assigned mentors. The remainder of the year will be spent on activities with their mentors and preparing their faith statements.

7. 7th and 8th grade students will be required to complete 15-20 hours of church activity involvement each year.

(continued next page)

Confirmation classes will begin the first week of October. A complete calendar for the 2018-2019 confirmation year will be put together and sent out to families with kids 5th-9th grade in September. For a copy of the full minutes from our long-range planning meeting, or if you want to ensure you are on future communications regarding confirmation and KAIR activities please send an email to Jen Lees at jjlees1@charter.net.

A big thank you to all the parents that gave input on enhancing the structure of our confirmation program at DLC.

DEERFIELD LUTHERAN CHURCH

COMMUNITY GARDEN

By mid-August we had delivered well over 100 pounds of produce to the Community Center for the food pantry and senior meals program, including beans, pea pods, a couple varieties of lettuce, basil and other herbs, cucumbers, radishes, carrots and peppers. Veggies and herbs in the boxes and in the new garden are growing nicely with hot weather and occasional rain. Thank you to the volunteers who are stepping in to help keep the weeds under control (they are also growing nicely) and to harvest as the produce is ready. We continue to depend on the labor of many to help feed the hungry in our community.

It isn’t too late to jump in as a volunteer. There are tools for weeding in and beside the little shed, or bring your favorite hoe. With the hot weather, we need to pay close attention to when the garden should be watered. The rainwater collection tank and/or outdoor faucet and the pump, hoses and watering cans are available. For harvesting, bring a bag or two. Produce can be delivered to the Deerfield Community Center any time during their business hours – they will weigh and record the amount for us – or it may be refrigerated until it can be delivered.

Sunday, September 9th is the ELCA’s annual “God’s Work Our Hands Sunday” when congregations are encouraged to do outreach-related projects that benefit our local communities. Our community garden is one such project! If you aren’t able to provide physical labor, you’re encouraged to come a little early or plan to stay after the worship service to take a look – and celebrate – this expanded ministry of ours. It is very satisfying work!

School Supply Collection

Outreach is once again collecting school supplies. Please put donated items in the basket in the narthex.

There are many ways for you to care for other by sharing Christ’s love...

This is the Church

We often wonder what the church is; why do people bother with it!  Our confirmation students and mentors last year drew two pictures of the church: one group drew the building and the other group drew all the people.  Many people see the church as a place to have Faith Milestones “taken care of”: baptism, Sunday School, First Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, Funerals. Others see the church as a place you only attend on  festival occasions like Easter and Christmas. But for others, it’s the place where we gather weekly for worship, the place where friendships are developed, where we give and receive, comfort, caring, and love in order to go out into the world to share Christ’s love with others!

Deerfield Lutheran Church at it’s best is caring, compassionate, concerned, loving.  As members and even nonmembers face health issues, loss, or stressful times or times of celebration, it is the members of our church who reach out with casseroles, warm homemade bread, cards, emails, calls, visits and lots and lots of hugs! This is the church.  The television preachers cannot do this nor do many larger churches because they do not know who their members are, but here at Deerfield Lutheran, we know and care about each other.  So, THANK  YOU  for being the church and the Hands and Feet of Christ to those in our community and beyond. This is truly what Deerfield Lutheran Church is all about:

Remember this ministry can be done by you as you crochet, knit, quilt or donate money for the yarns that are used.  Check when the next crocheting and knitting time will be held so you can learn how to knit or crochet and help us with this ministry! The Shawl Ministry is an important ministry showing love, comfort and hope to those in our community. The next Crochet/Knitting Group Times are at noon in October; check calendar for Sundays. All are welcome to come.  Come and  learn how to knit or crochet, work on a project you are doing or just to visit with other members of the congregation.

There is yarn available in Arlene's corner located at the top of the stairs by the lift.

CALLING PHOTOGRAPHS: Activities at the church go on continually. 5th Sunday Offering

September’s 30th

Sunday offering will be going to

MALC Jail Ministry

Offering envelopes have been provided in the envelope books, or there are some in the back of the sanctuary. Please give generously.

Madison Area Jail Ministry (MAJM) has been providing spiritual care to incarcerated men and women for 50 years. Approximately 750-800 men and 80-100 women are held each day in the Dane County Jail. Each person comes to the jail with unique physical, emotional, and spiritual needs. MAJM provides spiritual care through the work of our chaplains and a network of clergy and volunteers from the entire spectrum of faith traditions.

There would not be a ministry without the partnership of the Dane County Sheriff's Department, which provides office space, a computer, and works cooperatively with MAJM as active members of the advisory board.

Madison Area Jail Ministry is fully funded through the generosity of numerous area congregations, individuals and charitable organizations.

RSVP DRIVERS WANTED! Are you willing to help seniors in Deerfield & Cambridge get to medical appointments? Set your own schedule. Reimbursement for mileage! Contact Tom Bush (directordcc@gmail.com) if you are interested in driving for RSV.P.

SUNDAY FELLOWSHIP Do you enjoy visiting with friends over a cup of coffee/tea and a treat on Sundays?  Or maybe you prefer fruit and cheese?  Could you, your family or group bring refreshments for just ONE Sunday? Each Sunday, the members of Deerfield Lutheran Church share a time of fellowship in the narthex. We share ideas and recent events of our lives with people of similar concerns and faith in God. If you would like to volunteer for this important task, see the sign up for SUNDAY HOSPITALTY TREATS on the Opportunities Board in the narthex. Thank you to all who have provided treats for our Fellowship Time.

WELCOMING OTHERS

Reach out and welcome others. We all can look at the many new faces and the faces of those who have be absent for a while, smile, say "hello" and introduce ourselves. Make it a goal to meet at least one new person each Sunday; get out of your comfort zone and group and show the hospitality that Christians are known for. This is not the job of only a handful of members, it is everyone's job. If you are thankful and proud of the work we are doing at Deerfield Lutheran Church, then look up…smile and tell others.

We Enjoy Being Together! Fellowship is especially pleasant and meaningful when we are gathered together to worship God in spirit and truth. (John 4:24)

September - Appreciation of Volunteers

A vital part of any church - look closely and you'll see volunteers helping with church office operations, community garden, education and music ministry, housekeeping, outreach, and so much more. They are supporting and helping to spread the church's vision.

Our relationship and contact with one another stimulate and sharpen us in our walk with God and life, in general. We can grow and gain insights, gifts, and share God’s workings in the lives of others by volunteering within the church and community. It is through helping and volunteering that we can spread the word and love of God. Have you volunteered throughout this year? In September be with us as we recognize the many volunteers within our church.

WELCA

(Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Amercia)

All women who are confirmed members of the Deerfield Lutheran are part of this group and are placed in a circle. (An updated listing is being compiled and we are in need of your new contact information) There are various activities throughout the year you can be involved in.

As we look toward 2018, one ministry we offer to our members  is the  serving the funeral luncheon.  There is a core group of women who serve but we are looking for others who can help with this very important service that Deerfield Lutheran provides to the family who has lost a loved one.  Help us update our information by providing your phone number or email (easiest way we can contact you); let Roberta Fry or the church office know that you can help by providing a casserole, dessert, salad or help with set up, serving or clean up. What days would you be available to help serve a funeral luncheon?

"Mackenzie Allen Philips' youngest daughter, Missy, has been                     abducted during a family vacation and evidence that she may have been brutally murdered i                  is found in an abandoned shack deep in the Oregon wilderness. Four years later in the                              midst of his Great Sadness, Mack receives a suspicious note, apparently from God, inviting                     him back to that shack for a weekend. DLC Congregation Council Minutes

June 19, 2018

Present: Pastor Sexe, Darcy, Brad, Phyllis and Deb H.

Darcy called the meeting to order at 6:05. Request for joys and concerns, followed by opening prayer.

Secretary: Request for any changes to the last meeting minutes. Pastor moved that the minutes be accepted as presented. Brad seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Treasurer’s Report: General Fund checking balance at the end of May was $2,569.42. Contributed income for the month was $6,003.15 with YTD contributions at $43,326.43. YTD expenses are $50,936.09. Darcy did share that the remaining balance of our ELCA Mission Fund has been cashed in and that money has been put into the cash reserve money market account for easy access if needed.

Deb moved that the treasurer’s report be accepted; Phyllis seconded the motion. Motion carried.

Pastors’ Report:

There will be a stewardship presentation on July 10th at 7pm at Christ Lutheran, Stoughton. The workshop will focus on the twelve “donor confidence factors that can either bolster or undermine stewardship efforts. Arlyn Turnquist and Pastor will be attending.

Synod assembly was held at Kalahari Resort, Wisconsin Dells, May 5-6. Rev. Viviane Thomas-Breitfeld was elected as our new Bishop. She will be installed on August 18th at First Lutheran Church in Janesville. All are invited to attend.

Pastor will be preaching at the 150th anniversary of his home congregation on Sunday, August 5th. Jackie Hansen will be leading our service.

Old Business:

Garden update: Potatoes have been planted in the new garden plot. Thank you to Melissa Owens for making labels and marking the rows in the garden that have been planted for easy, crop identification. We continue to ask for volunteers to assist in weeding, watering and harvesting.

Education/Youth: Pastor has material for the group to review-“Alpha for Teens”. The group is done with the monthly breakfasts and “Athletes in Action” presentations. They are currently reading “The Assist”.

Fellowship:

The annual ice cream social will be held at Fireman’s Park on June 27th, from 4-7:00 pm.

The knitting/crochet group is taking a summer break.

A section has been added to the website that highlights the Community Garden and there are many photos posted of the garden group in action.

Property: The committee has been trimming trees and has finished pulling shrubbery. A thank you to Jerry H. for the great job of mowing the property! Still waiting on the installation of the second water meter for garden watering.

Mission Teams: 1-2 of our youth are traveling to Houston with a group from Liberty. They will be attending a National Youth Gathering.

We have several members from our congregation that will be traveling to Guatemala with “Brick by Brick” in July.

Outreach: We did receive the grant from the Village of Deerfield that Mary had applied for. This money was used for the purchase of new vinyl for the counter and tables in the Fireman’s Park pavilion. This project has been completed.

We had a nice turnout for the church work day; people worked both inside and outdoors. Volunteers would be welcome to continue with other cleaning/organizing projects. Just let the Outreach committee know if there is something that you’d like to do.

Worship: A dehumidifier either has been or is going to be installed for the piano.

The sound system has been having some issues recently and a possible revamp made be needed. Angie Williams will be getting a quote for the necessary repairs.

Education: VBS will be held August 17-22, from 5:30-7:30. The theme this year is “Shipwrecked; Rescued by Jesus”. Melissa is still seeking teachers as well as supplies. We need to advertise in as many venues as possible. Posters will be made and hung up in Deerfield and Cambridge. Registration forms will be attached to the posters and are also be available in the Narthex. Brad will be doing a bonfire the last night for a cookout.

Sunday school will be doing a penny challenge and hopefully helping with harvesting in the garden when classes resume.

Stewardship: Need to recruit for committee members and also update the Time and Talent sheets in the very near future. It was suggested that maybe a section be added for “Adopt a bill” (ie like the member that has taken over the snow removal payment). Hopefully we will get a couple of bonfires in this fall.

Finance: Jerry and Angie have both been looking into other giving options—pay by text, paypal, ect. Hopefully we can have a report on the system they have been looking into next meeting.

Our next meeting will be held on August 21st.

Pastor motioned for meeting adjournment. Deb H. 2nd. Meeting adjourned with closing prayer.
