Why Church?  (Turning ME to WE)

(I’m continuing a monthly series on the basics of our Christian Faith.  Join me beginning Sunday, September 24th after worship for our New Member’s Class!)

I love Lutheran Rocker Jay Beech’s The Church Song (from Rock Hymnal – yes, Lutherans have a Rock Hymnal!)  because it tells us we are the church!

The Church is not a building

   where people go to pray;

It's not made out of sticks and stones,

it's not made out of clay.

REFRAIN

We are the Church,

   the body of our Lord;

We are all God's children,

   we have been restored.

You can go to worship

   but you cannot go to Church;

You can't find a building that's alive

no matter how you search. (REFRAIN)

The Church is not a business,

   a committee, or a board;

It's not a corporation

for the business of the Lord. (REFRAIN)

The Church, it is the people,

   living out their lives

Called, enlightened, sanctified

for the work of Jesus Christ. (REFRAIN)

“The Church, it is the people, living out their lives… for the work of Jesus Christ.”

Yes!  WE can be The Church without a building, parking lot (which needs work!), business meetings or a budget!  Like our ancestors, we could simply gather in each other’s homes for worship and together pool our time, talent, and money to do the work of Jesus Christ as the Spirit would lead us.  There are a growing number of ‘House Churches’ today that follow this basic model.  I have a friend who belongs to a house church where everyone shares what they can and together they do some wonderful things for Jesus!  I sometimes envy him because he does not have to lay awake nights worrying about funding an institution that owns buildings where people gather for worship, education, fellowship, and things like AA and Scouts; or seminaries to train pastors; Bible Camps like Lutherdale; social welfare agencies like Lutheran Social Services; national & global relief organizations like Lutheran Disaster Response, Lutheran World Relief and Lutheran World Hunger, Lutherans United Assisting After Disasters; not to mention Nursing Homes like Skaalen.  The list of institutions The Church has established and sustained over two thousand years is incredible! Did you know hospitals and universities were first established and supported by The Church?  Now they are run independently, but they got their start as part of The Church’s ministry.

I know times have changed and so have institutions.  Many have become cynical about supporting institutions (don’t they all waste our money?). Isn’t it better to return to the early model of the ‘house’ church and do the work of Jesus that way?  Pick our own favorite cause and give to that?  I have to admit there are days when I find the simplicity of this model appealing!  Just take care of one or two things the way I see fit (period).

The problem with this cozy idea of The Church is that Jesus won’t allow it.  Remember his words, “Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I have commanded you. And remember, I am with you always, to the end of the age.” (Matthew 28:19-20)

Right from it’s beginning The Church is charged with a global mission.  Jesus goes with us as we go global!  The Holy Spirit is poured out and the Apostles are sent to proclaim the good news of Jesus’ resurrection, doing the work of Jesus bringing new life to people living EVERYWHERE. This inevitably leads to new institutions like missionary organizations, hospitals, universities, and homes for the aged and infirmed.  We are still finding new ways to do the work of Jesus, like our own Deerfield Lutheran Community Garden started with money from Lutheran World Hunger which provides fresh veggies for our Community Center - which, by the way, was started by our two Lutheran churches!

So to return to the question, Why Church?  Because God’s Spirit poured out on all flesh – on our bodies, not just our minds – enlists our separate bodies to become part of his body (called Church) in order to do the work of Jesus EVERYWHERE.  None of us can do this work all on our own or even in our worship gatherings, small or large.  We need to do this together as a universal church (in the creed, catholic means universal) not as separate and often competing entities.  This cuts against the grain of Me, Myself, and I, where we do whatever we do for our own personal fulfillment.  Instead it’s about the messy ways (working with bodies and not just ideas is always messy) WE get to do the work of Jesus.  It’s about taking time for the littlest, least, and lost – the most vulnerable among us.  Yes, even allowing little children to led us into new ways of worshiping and doing the work of Jesus!  I hope you will join us.  Regular Worship on Sundays at 9 am or Wednesdays at 6 pm   Once a month Youth Led Worship is at 10:30 am

Pastor Larry

“I must still read and study the catechism daily, yet I cannot master it as I wish, but must remain a child and a pupil of the catechism, and I do it gladly.”

-Martin Luther in his preface to the Large Catechism

Milestone Ministry Uplifts 3rd Grade Bible Sunday will be October 29th at the 9:00 service. When children are baptized, parents and Godparent(s) promise to "place in their child's hands the Holy Scriptures.” We invite you to join these 3rd graders as the congregation helps them fulfill that promise by placing in their hands a  Bible as a gift from their family of faith. The mission of  Milestone Ministry is to uplift and celebrate milestones in the faith life of our congregation’s members and to connect the generations of our congregational family.

Fourth graders from Deerfield Lutheran                            Church will celebrate a Milestone in their Faith Journey on Sunday, October 15, 2017.  On this day they will take a place at the Lord’s Table, a place of forgiveness, hope, renewal, nourishment and strength. A big thank you to Jenn Brattlie and Jen Lees for organizing and teaching these young people the meaning and significance of the Sacrament of Holy Communion for their daily lives! The students began with video instruction to help them understand the importance of communion, they then made their own chalices and  this month be continue in the study,  make banners showing milestones in their faith journey, and finally, they bake communion bread with Jerry Schultz.  First Communion will be on October 15, 2017 at the 9:00am service. Plan to attend and support these young people as they celebrate this Milestone in their Faith Journey.

CONFIRMATION:  The 9th Grade Confirmation class along with their mentors began on September 20th. Brenda Moe – Peer Ministry

Our Campus Ministries are “spiritual and religious communities that provide opportunities for students to be centered in a caring community, explore the connections between faith-traditions and real world complexities, make a difference in the lives of others through service work, and grow in a sense of their own abilities and self-awareness.”  BRENDA MOE is involved in Peer MInistry at The Corner House: Lutheran Campus Ministry (ELCA) at the UW in Milwaukee.  Corner House  “is a welcoming place for all people. They come to study, rest, play, serve, worship, and live more deeply into the grace of God's love. Plus there is free coffee! The purpose is built around the Bible and the Sacraments and they join together to serve God and minister in Christ's name. Through this ministry and the Lutheran tradition of reform, they explore social and spiritual concerns and accept the challenge to unite with all the people of God.”

Brenda is a Sophomore at UWM majoring in Information Science And Technology with a minor in Art and Design & Computer Science. For Brenda, Peer Ministry has really become part of her day to day routine and all the events that happen at the Corner House become the highlights of her week.  The Corner House is defiantly her home away from home where she can go to take a breath and a break from the ridged school schedule.  At the Corner House, she can be herself and learn about others.  Being a peer minister only amplifies that fun!  Brenda was part of the Knitting and Crocheting Group at Deerfield Lutheran while she was in High  School and realized that the fellowship and stress-release this craft gave her was something she wanted to share with others.  She has started a knitting /crocheting group at the Corner House, “Friends, Faith, Fibers Group”, that helps others relax and learn this new activity. Brenda was able to schedule this weekly event  and those in the group are “hooked”!

As our children go off to college, encourage them take a look at the Campus Ministry Events that are available to them. Brenda is forever grateful for Corner House and would recommend being a peer minister to anyone willing to have a good time growing in their faith. Campus Ministry gets young adults involved in activities from many different faith-traditions and philosophies; they can be found on most campuses and in the Greater Milwaukee Area. God Bless Brenda as she continues to be a part of peer ministry and sharing her faith with others!

KAIR Update

KAIR activities started in September with a wonderful breakfast at the Dunsirn's home and hearing a great devotional to end the school week. We also had the opportunity to attend a Fellowship of Christian Athletes meeting in Stoughton, and hear firsthand from UW Athletes about the importance of God in their lives.

We will have our next breakfast on October 20th, sponsored by the Lees family and held at the church. Anyone in grades 6 to 12 are welcome to join us.

Youth Service is on October 8th at 10:30. We are looking for kids to participate. We need greeters, readers, ushers, people to participate in skits or provide special music.

On October 9th we are hoping to take an interested group to learn more about the Jewish faith as we are invited to a Sukkot celebration at Temple Beth El.

What is Sukkot?

Sukkot is known as the “Festival of Tabernacles” and the “Feast of Booths.” It is one of Judaism’s three central pilgrimage festivals, along with Passover and Shavuot.

And finally, if any kids are interested in handing out candy and leading games the night of 10/25 at the church for the Deerfield Chamber of Commerce Trick or Treat let us know! Looking to have some fun and support our community event!

If anyone is interested in organizing a trip to Schusters Haunted Forest give us a call. This was one of the things the kids thought it would be fun to do!

Devotionals have been ordered so please get money to Jen Lees if you asked for a copy for your child.

Check out Deerfield Lutheran Church Religious Education on Facebook for youth activities and events!

Learning About Our Neighbor's Faith - Sukkot

You are invited to join our KAIR group as we learn about our Jewish neighbors by sharing a Sukkot celebration on Monday, October 9th at Temple Beth El in Madison. The event begins at 6:30 and ends by 8:30 pm Rabbis Jonathan and Bonnie ask that we bring blankets, flashlights, as well as tablecloths and food to share for picnicking - please NO shellfish or pork dishes. Dress warmly!

Small groups will be taken to the outdoor Sukkah where we get to learn about this Jewish festival. After everyone has had a chance to sit in the Sukkah we'll gather in the newly remodeled reception area for a pot-luck picnic. Contact Pastor Larry atpastorsexe@gmail.com or call 764-5566 for more information. Folks may meet us at Temple Beth El or car pool from Deerfield Lutheran.

FELLOWSHIP BONFIRE- October 7th

(This will be the last organized Saturday Night Bonfire for the year)

Bring your own hot dogs, s'mores and lawn games to the DLC fire pit. This is not just a “church” event; we are extending the invitation to the community as well.

So mark your calendars for October 7! Bring a lawn game if you have one. Bring your own hot dogs and s'mores fixings, a roasting stick and invite a friend or two and join us at the Fellowship Fire! Hope to see you Saturday, October 7th!

Global Fellowship Potluck:                                           Reformation Day this year is commemorating                                       the 500th Anniversary. To help us share and                                          remember our connection to the global church, we ask you bring a special treat or food you enjoy from another part of the globe: this may be a family favorite which has been passed down or a  new food you have come to enjoy which is part of the culture of another place around the world. Plan now to come and celebrate a Global Fellowship with us after service on the 29th of October!   At the October 29th GLOBAL FELLOWSHIP POTLUCK following worship you may wonder what  you can bring. Pastor Larry will   bring Hummus and Pita Bread and Debbie will be bringing Luther Bread . Someone may like to bring cheese curds or salsa; a Danish cookie or German treat or maybe a Guatemalan Treat or an African treat.  This is a unique opportunity to reaffirm our commitment to the world by sharing their culture through the food they eat.  Sign up sheet in narthex!

If you would be willing to provide special music during worship, please talk to Jane Holland or email her at jmfholland@aol.com

There are many ways for you to care for other by sharing Christ’s love...

This is the Church

We often wonder what the church is; why do people bother with it!  Our confirmation students and mentors last year drew two pictures of the church: one group drew the building and the other group drew all the people.  Many people see the church as a place to have Faith Milestones “taken care of”: baptism, Sunday School, First Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, Funerals. Others see the church as a place you only attend on  festival occasions like Easter and Christmas. But for others, it’s the place where we gather weekly for worship, the place where friendships are developed, where we give and receive, comfort, caring, and love in order to go out into the world to share Christ’s love with others!

Deerfield Lutheran Church at it’s best is caring, compassionate, concerned, loving.  As members and even nonmembers face health issues, loss, or stressful times or times of celebration, it is the members of our church who reach out with casseroles, warm homemade bread, cards, emails, calls, visits and lots and lots of hugs! This is the church.  The television preachers cannot do this nor do many larger churches because they do not know who their members are, but here at Deerfield Lutheran, we know and care about each other.  So, THANK  YOU  for being the church and the Hands and Feet of Christ to those in our community and beyond. This is truly what Deerfield Lutheran Church is all about:

“Called in worship to care for others by sharing Christ’s love!

Challenge Fund..

The Matthew 14:16-21Fund

Now is the time to make a contribution to the Matthew 14:16-21 Fund if you have not already done so. The fund was established in May to help meet the congregation’s 2017 budget and prevent depletion of our reserve fund. The goal is to match $10,000 in challenge gifts, pledged at that time by a group of members, to raise a total of $20,000, the average amount that has been drawn from our reserve fund the past several years (and all that remains in reserve).

The Matthew 14 Fund is a one-time appeal for donations above and beyond our regular giving, even as we pursue a long-term goal of increased stewardship in order to support – and extend – our ministry in the years to come. Please use the special Fund envelopes or be sure to designate that your contribution is for the Matthew 14 Fund.

Jesus said to them … you give them (the crowds) something to eat. They replied, “We have nothing here but five loaves and two fish.”… he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves…And all ate and were filled; and they took up what was left over… twelve baskets full.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY: Is there someone you know who needs the warmth and love of a prayer shawl or lap-robe?  Let Phyllis Rude, Danielle Schultz, Debbie Sexe or the church office know. Remember this ministry can be done by you as you crochet, knit, quilt or donate money for the yarns that are used.  Check when the next crocheting and knitting time will be held so you can learn how to knit or crochet and help us with this ministry! The Shawl Ministry is an important ministry showing love, comfort and hope to those in our community. The next Crochet/Knitting Group Times are at noon in October; check calendar for Sundays. All are welcome to come.  Come and  learn how to knit or crochet, work on a project you are doing or just to visit with other members of the congregation.

There is yarn available in Arlene's corner located at the top of the stairs by the lift.

Thank you Volunteers!

We couldn’t do it without you!

Thank you to our 9th Grade Confirmation Mentors: Jodi Fisher, Melissa Frame, Jim Haack, and Darryl Moe.

Thank you to all who have stepped forward to be our 2017-2018 Sunday School teaching staff!

SUNDAY FELLOWSHIP Do you enjoy visiting with friends over a cup of coffee/tea and a treat on Sundays?  Or maybe you prefer fruit and cheese?  Could you, your family or group bring refreshments for just ONE Sunday? Each Sunday, the members of Deerfield Lutheran Church share a time of fellowship in the narthex. We share ideas and recent events of our lives with people of similar concerns and faith in God. If you would like to volunteer for this important task, see the sign up for SUNDAY HOSPITALTY TREATS on the Opportunities Board in the narthex. Thank you to all who have provided treats for our Fellowship Time.

CALLING PHOTOGRAPHS: Activities at the church go on continually. Take your phone or camera and snap a picture so that we can share what is happening on Facebook, on the screen in the narthex, on our website and put in our photo-archives. Please send them to dlchurchoffice@gmail.com or to pastorsexe@gmail.com.

Do you have any church notices that you would like posted on the church website, Facebook or in the Independent?  Please send them to sarbed@hotmail.com

Lutheran Theology Brings Joy.

(from: lutheranreformation.org)

The heart and soul of Lutheran theology is the Gospel of Jesus Christ. God loves you!! That’s good news. All of your sins are forgiven through the death and resurrection of Jesus. This forgiveness is given to you for free. It is a gift of God for you.

When we trust in God’s love for us in Jesus Christ, we see God as He truly is, as a God of love. His creation is His gift for us. His Spirit gives us faith. His salvation is given to us freely. His eternal paradise is prepared for us. God is with us. God will never leave us.

Joy marks the life of the one who trusts in Christ. But joy isn’t always happiness. Sometimes life is full of trials (crosses) that we must face. Evil is real. Sin has consequences. These things war against us. But even in these things, we know that God is with us. This is not some trite saying or nice thought. We know that God is with us in the midst of suffering, since He is revealed precisely through the suffering of Jesus.

The most important teaching of Lutheran theology is that God loves you with no effort, merit or work on your behalf. God loves you. He sent His only Son to die and rise for you. His love is fulfilled in the Gospel. That is good news and fills us with joy. God loves you for all of eternity. Freely. That will never change.

hange.

NEW AUTOMATIC TRANSFER AUTHORIZATION FORM FOR ELECTRONIC GIVING ENCLOSED

As we, the members of Deerfield Lutheran, continue the conversation about the future of our church, the topic of stewardship is one of the priorities. We can all consider how we share our time, talents and possessions.

Please see the enclosed updated form which you can use to set up Automatic giving through your bank. Automatic Transfer offerings are a convenient method of giving regularly throughout each year. If you choose to set up electronic giving without using this form, be sure to inform the church office or Jackie Hansen. This is necessary in order for your contributions to be recorded in your account for end of year tax statements. Thrivent members can call the office for a form or pick one up in the Narthex to set this up as well.

Thank You to those already giving electronically!
