The Three B’s –

Believe, Behave, Become

(We receive new members on Sunday, December 3rd. If you wish to join email Pastor Larry at pastorsexe@gmail.com or call 608-764-5566 to arrange times to meet. This article continues his series on membership basics.)

There’s an old saying that goes, there are three kinds of people in this world: those who watch things happen, those who make things happen and those who say, "Hey, what just happened?" Which one are you?

In our gospel a few weeks ago Jesus faces a question from religious leaders: "By what authority are you doing these things, and who gave you this authority?" Jesus answers, I have a question for you and if you answer my question, I’ll answer yours: "Did the baptism of John come from heaven, or was it of human origin?" The leaders begin to run through the possibilities: If they say it came from heaven, Jesus will say, "Then why didn’t you believe him?" If they say it was only human, they will lose the crowd, all of whom believe John to be a great prophet sent from God. Taking the safe approach, being "clever”, the leaders simply say, "We do not know." Jesus responds, "Neither shall I tell you by what authority I do these things." Their cleverness not only fails to fool Jesus, it fails to get them an answer.

The religious leaders in this story might be compared to the trickster figure in Native American religion. Often seen as a coyote, the trickster is a creature who prides himself on being clever; one who can morph into various forms depending on what is demanded by the circumstances. The religious leaders take the role of coyote; attempting to be clever, to trick, to be vague enough to please everyone.

The futility of living life as a charlatan or chameleon is a theme we see early on in Jesus’ ministry. In the Sermon on the Mount, he warned: "Beware of practicing your piety before others in order to be seen by them…whenever you give alms, do not sound a trumpet before you, as the hypocrites do…so that they may be praised by others…And whenever you pray, do not be like the hypocrites; for they love to stand and pray…so that they may be seen by others" (Mt 6:1-2, 5).

It would be easy to use this passage to attack others and expose their hypocrisy. Perhaps a more honest approach is to try and see ourselves in these leaders, as we have all played the role of trickster. Most of us at some point have adapted our outward appearance to suit the circumstances. Whether it’s work or home, we sometimes selectively share only parts of ourselves in order to please others; we turn from our own truth in order to please the larger crowd. Like the clever politician, we speak out of both (Continued next page) sides of our mouth in an attempt to gain some clever advantage over others. Sadly, there are times that we play the trickster with God as well. We check parts of ourselves at the door before we come to worship just like we check our coats. We bring only the "appropriate" sides of ourselves to the altar; the shiny, scrubbed parts. Our shadowy selves, our brokenness we hide away in shame.

How long can we keep up this façade? What will we ultimately gain by trying to fool others? Living a lie is an exhausting exercise. Whether it’s the religious leaders of Jesus’ time, the coyote figure or even a fast-talking politician, this passage reminds us of the importance of honest words reflective of our real beliefs. Jesus’ continues with a parable. He tells about a father who asks his two sons to go work in the vineyard. One refuses, but in the end, goes to work; the other says he’ll go, but then in the end does not. "Who did their father’s will?" Jesus asks. "The first," the religious leaders respond. Jesus then hammers home the point: "John came to you in the way of righteousness and you did not believe him…and even after you saw it, you did not change your minds and believe him."

A corporate consultant turned minister talks about “The Three B’s: Believe, Behave, Become." The idea she’s getting across with these three Bs is what we believe in our heart drives our behavior, and our behavior drives what we become.

Jesus’ story seems to offer a similar message. "John came to you, and you did not believe…even after you saw it, you did not change." In short, it’s not enough to just hear the word and "say" you believe, you have to live the belief, you have to allow what you believe to change you! (Ask God to help you with this!)

A word of warning: we must choose our beliefs carefully. Ralph Waldo Emerson once wrote, "A person will worship something, have no doubt about that… That which dominates our imaginations and our thoughts will determine our lives, and our character. Therefore, it behooves us to be careful what we worship, for what we are worshipping we are becoming."

We are all offered the Word, yet some of us still turn away and refuse to change. In order to "make things happen," we must first find something to believe in. This passage in the book of Matthew invites us to base that belief on the Word of God; to hear it, believe it and then act on it.

Milestone Ministry here at Deerfield Lutheran brings an awareness of the presence of God not only to children but families and individuals of all generations through a vital partnership between home and the Congregation. The Five Principles of Milestone Ministry are that it fosters healthy faith-forming relationships; it partners home and congregation in vibrant ministry; it lifts up the home as a primary setting to be the church in the world; it allows people to experience the faith so it may be caught in daily life occasions; and it honors the role of adults in the Christian formation of children and youth. Serving as central tools to all Milestone Ministry events are the Four Keys: Caring Conversations, Devotions, Service, and Rituals and Traditions. We celebrate milestones in worship throughout the year.

Milestone Ministry Uplifted the receiving of 3rd Grade Spark Bibles on Reformation Sunday, October 29 at the 9:00 service.

When children are baptized, parents and Godparent(s)

promise to "place in their child's hands the Holy Scriptures.” The

congregation gave the gift of a Spark Bible NRSV which parents placed in the hands of their child. This edition of the bible is designed to “Spark” a relationship with God.

There is planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting that can be done. Make it a Family Affair! There will be opportunities to help at concessions stands sponsored by the DLC beginning with the Ragnar Relay Friday, June 9th as well as other times throughout the summer. Will you be available to help with VBS? Let us know so you can be part of this fun activity!

There are many ways for you to care for other by sharing Christ’s love...

This is the Church

We often wonder what the church is; why do people bother with it!  Our confirmation students and mentors last year drew two pictures of the church: one group drew the building and the other group drew all the people.  Many people see the church as a place to have Faith Milestones “taken care of”: baptism, Sunday School, First Communion, Confirmation, Marriage, Funerals. Others see the church as a place you only attend on  festival occasions like Easter and Christmas. But for others, it’s the place where we gather weekly for worship, the place where friendships are developed, where we give and receive, comfort, caring, and love in order to go out into the world to share Christ’s love with others!

Deerfield Lutheran Church at it’s best is caring, compassionate, concerned, loving.  As members and even nonmembers face health issues, loss, or stressful times or times of celebration, it is the members of our church who reach out with casseroles, warm homemade bread, cards, emails, calls, visits and lots and lots of hugs! This is the church.  The television preachers cannot do this nor do many larger churches because they do not know who their members are, but here at Deerfield Lutheran, we know and care about each other.  So, THANK  YOU  for being the church and the Hands and Feet of Christ to those in our community and beyond. This is truly what Deerfield Lutheran Church is all about:

UPCOMING EVENTS

All Saint’s Service is November 5th

All Saints' Day celebration has a long history in the worship life of the

Christian Church. It began as a commemoration of the martyrs who

had died for the faith, and it has since become a day when we honor

and remember those who, in death, have joined the Church

Triumphant, as well as the faithful saints of the present who serve

Jesus Christ. Martin Luther held that all Christians are simultaneously

sinner and saint--a sinner because of our rebellious nature, but a saint

because of salvation in Jesus. By reading their names, ringing a bell

and lighting a candle we remember those of our congregation who

have died during the past year. We remember those in our

congregation who have died this last year:

Bruce A. Hoffland (interment)

Shirley A. Thorstad

Donald E. Boldt

Janet L. Berge

Elaine Teisberg Thompson (memorial)

Following the lighting of the candles, we proclaim the message of

hope and life eternal through Jesus Christ. May all the saints, past and

present, endure forever in God's grace!

Thanksgiving Eve Service

Wednesday, November 22nd at 7:00 pm November is the month in which we have a tradition of reflecting on giving thanks. We do so in the context of Christian faith and this blessed congregation.

Christ the King Sunday – November 26th

Christ the King Sunday is celebrated on the Sunday before the beginning of Advent that starts the new Church Year (December 3, 2017). As the last Sunday of the Christian Church Year, Christ the King Sunday is the climax, the conclusion of the liturgical journey of the life of Christ and the Gospel message. During the past twelve months, the entire life of Christ and his teachings have been celebrated. In celebrating the Reign of Christ the King, this Sunday also provides an appropriate bridge to the new Church Year that begins the following Sunday on the first Sunday of Advent with an emphasis on hope and expectation, the longing for the coming of the Kingdom of God amid the darkness of a sinful world..

Automatic Transfer – A Commitment to

Faithful Giving

Managing the family budget via automatic transfer has become the preferred choice for a large portion of today’s households. In addition to saving time, the arrangement minimizes the risk of overlooking regular bills and helps keep budget priorities in place. There is no cost for the service and the amount can be changed, or an account can be closed in the event circumstances change.

Families of faith are encouraged to include their stewardship giving as a budget priority and to assure that contributions are made on a regular basis. Automatic transfer can make that happen, and in the process can help the congregation manage its budget as well. Please use the enclosed sign-up form and join a growing number of members who are already giving this way.

Long Range/Short Range Planning

Sunday, November 12 following worship service

A group of 18 met on Sunday, October 8 to continue our series of discussions regarding the financial challenges we face in 2018. A review of activities that have been carried out over the summer made clear that while the Matthew 14 Fund and other fundraisers will help prevent complete depletion of our reserves in 2017, one-time efforts cannot sustain our budget long-term.

There was consensus that 1) automatic transfer giving must be

actively promoted to help stabilize income – the sign-up form will be inserted in bulletins and the Echo on a regular basis, 2) we must address the issue of worship attendance – several ideas are on the table and 3) we must keep the congregation aware of the challenge and of progress that is being made.

Topics for discussion November 12 include other suggestions that have been or will be made and recommendations to the Finance Committee as they prepare the 2018 budget. Please plan to be involved.

We are fortunate to have folks with expertise in these areas as well as reps from local government, school, law enforcement, churches and service organizations as well as concerned parents.
