Mission Statement:
Called in worship to care for others by sharing Christ's Love!
Milestone Ministry here at Deerfield Lutheran brings an awareness of the presence of God not only to children but families and individuals of all generations through a vital partnership between home and the Congregation. The Five Principles of Milestone Ministry are that it fosters healthy faith-forming relationships; it partners home and congregation in vibrant ministry; it lifts up the home as a primary setting to be the church in the world; it allows people to experience the faith so it may be caught in daily life occasions; and it honors the role of adults in the Christian formation of children and youth. Serving as central tools to all Milestone Ministry events are the Four Keys: Caring Conversations, Devotions, Service, and Rituals and Traditions. We celebrate milestones in worship throughout the year.

He Calls Us By Name

There is a strange little detail in the post-Easter Jesus stories that often goes unnoticed. It is a detail that doesn’t fit. Jesus appears to Mary and she doesn’t recognize him. Jesus appears to two disciples on the road to Emmaus and they don’t recognize him. Jesus stands on the beach but the disciples don’t know that it is Jesus. (There’s no need to get cute here and argue that it was early, maybe Jesus was standing with the sun at his back…John says it simply, they didn’t know it was Jesus.)
If the whole point of the resurrection is that Jesus rises from the dead and appears to his followers, complete with the wounds in his hand, feet and sides, then why can’t they recognize him?

We can do two things with that question. Either we can play with it in our imagination (which is sometimes an appropriate way to listen to the Spirit guiding us in our understanding of scripture) or we can pay attention to what actually happens in the text. We can read the story closely!

In this instance, reading the story closely is the way to go.

Mary recognizes Jesus when he calls her by name. The two disciples recognize Jesus when he breaks bread with them around a table. The disciples out fishing recognize Jesus when they do what he tells them to do – they cast their nets on the right side of the boat.

We recognize Jesus when Jesus calls us personally by name. We recognize Jesus when we break bread with him around a table. We recognize Jesus when we do what he calls us to do. Jesus calls us by name when we are baptized. He calls us by name each and every time we return to him in repentance and surrender to his loving will. Jesus reveals himself to us when we gather with others in worship and share the same meal he gave to his earthly disciples. There, in the midst of real down to earth people, Jesus comes down to earth in us. And Jesus reveals himself to us as we live our lives, doing what Jesus calls and sets us aside to do.

I would go beyond that now. The WORLD recognizes Jesus when people are called by name. The WORLD recognizes Jesus in Christian community that gathers for worship. And the WORLD recognizes Jesus when his modern day disciples display the kind of down to earth love that exemplifies people of faith.

Far too often we act like Pharisees. Far too often we reject Christian community and contribute to divisiveness, disunity and isolation rather than embracing diversity, surrendering in humility and trusting in God’s presence. And far too often we cast Jesus aside and stubbornly fish any way we want to fish, doing our own thing, compartmentalizing our faith.

But the story doesn’t go away. In the face of a warring world, a world of economic injustice and exploitation, a world of mass murder, a world of darkness, Jesus still reveals himself to people, by name, one at a time. He still comes in the breaking of bread. And he still appears where his people do his will.

WHAT YOU CAN DO TO BE “THE HANDS AND FEET FOR CHRIST” HERE AT DEERFIELD LUTHERAN! There are many opportunities! Get involved with our expanding Community Garden. There is planting, weeding, watering, and harvesting that can be done. Make it a Family Affair! There will be opportunities to help at concessions stands sponsored by the DLC beginning with the Ragnar Relay Friday, June 9th as well as other times throughout the summer. Will you be available to help with VBS? Let us know so you can be part of this fun activity!
LOOKING FOR MEMBERS - The Fellowship Committee is responsible for the congregation's fellowship, library, and public relations ministry as they relate to the congregation's mission: “Called in Worship to Care for Others by Sharing Christ’s Love.” This committee is responsible for the congregation's fellowship ministry, collaborating with other committees on providing materials and fellowship opportunities for Christian growth, and responsible for sharing the congregation's experiences with the community. Activities have included fellowship after service each Sunday making sure that the coffee and lemonade are ready and that treats are provided, Lenten Soup Suppers, Decorating the Church for Christmas, helping with various special services or events and potlucks, the Shawl Ministry, Website and Facebook updates, articles and information sent to the local paper. We are also in need of photographers to document with pictures the many activities we have going on in our church.

One part of the Committee’s responsibility is the church library - located in the Fireside room; it is in need of weeding and organizing! We are searching for someone to help with this endeavor. There is a children’s cart of books, teen books in the High School room in the lower level, and in the Fireside room there are shelves of books. We also have various videos in the building that need to be organized. Anyone who has a passion for this, please contact Phyllis Rude or Debbie Sexe or let the church office know. There is also our “Little Library” in front of the church for a quick exchange of books. A special thank you to those who have donated books for this library exchange.

SHORT RANGE/LONG RANGE
FINANCIAL PLANNING
Facing the prospect of deficit spending in 2017 that threatened to wipe out our financial reserves, members of our congregation responded with creativity and generosity – including a one-time special fund drive. We succeeded in buying more time to work on our long-term vision for the ministry we share as Deerfield Lutheran Church and to plan for support of that calling. The responsibility for developing that vision and planning how to support it belongs to all of us. We need your prayers for God’s guidance, and we need your ideas and your involvement. On Sunday April 8, right after worship, we will gather in the Education Unit to continue the discussion series that started last year. Please plan to be there.

PRAYER SHAWL MINISTRY: Is there someone you know who needs the warmth and love of a prayer shawl or lap-robe? Let Phyllis Rude, Danielle Schultz, Debbie Sexe or the church office know. Remember this ministry can be done by you as you crochet, knit, quilt or donate money for the yarns that are used. Check when the next crocheting and knitting time will be held so you can learn how to knit or crochet and help us with this ministry! The Shawl Ministry is an important ministry showing love, comfort and hope to those in our community. The next Crochet/Knitting Group Times are at noon in October; check calendar for Sundays. All are welcome to come. Come and learn how to knit or crochet, work on a project you are doing or just to visit with other members of the congregation.
There is yarn available in Arlene's corner located at the top of the stairs by the lift.
WELCA
(Women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Amercia)
All women who are confirmed members of the Deerfield Lutheran are part of this group and are placed in a circle. (An updated listing is being compiled and we are in need of your new contact information) There are various activities throughout the year you can be involved in.
As we look toward 2018, one ministry we offer to our members is the serving the funeral luncheon. There is a core group of women who serve but we are looking for others who can help with this very important service that Deerfield Lutheran provides to the family who has lost a loved one. Help us update our information by providing your phone number or email (easiest way we can contact you); let Roberta Fry or the church office know that you can help by providing a casserole, dessert, salad or help with set up, serving or clean up. What days would you be available to help serve a funeral luncheon?
